EQ Discovery: Apollo Gets The Girl

Apollo Gets The Girl

By Mandy Rogers

Scottish electro pop is starting to stir some excitement again. After our recent find and EQ Discovery of Churches, here comes a trio from Glasgow, Apollo Gets The Girl.

A space age name for a super sci-fi stoked experience.  The band are hooked on all things other worldly and cinematic, and it reflects into the inner reaches of their music.

As in, first taste track “New Dawn”, their mellow electronica softly bleats across the music sphere to infinity and beyond stoking up some rocket fuel injected electro rock riffs in it’s climax. How very Ultravox of them to end it like that!

Engaging, with an enlightening twist on the current hot bed of established electronica acts. Apollo Gets The Girl have scored a new dawn of electronica of their own making.

Although, a little work to be done on the promotional picture side, would be heartwarming to see!

EQ Discovery: Billy Cullum

Billy Cullum

By Mandy Rogers

Let’s peep into the fantastical alt-pop world of Billy Cullum.

It’s an otherworldly experience that lands this promising star of the future into our eclectic mindsets as the male Florence Welch.

Giving rise to flamboyant soundscapes, Billy creates a rich and rousing pop formula bursting with a presence of theatrical melodrama that makes full use of his classical and arts background.

Currently at work on his debut album “The Wild Hour”, Billy has unleashed some pretty impressive works already in the sublime and ardently emotive “Howling” plucking a real tug of excitement on the heartstrings in response to it’s diverse nature.

Further demonstrating through the buoyant hit of intense pop friendly melody on “In A War”, that this approach is all-embracing with a defining creative flair at it’s core that is very much owned by Billy Cullum.

That’s my interpretation of it, however, whatever it is that Billy is creating, it’s sounding absolutely divine and has an assured and wanting audience in myself and other likeminded individuals, with a diversified outlook to our music preferences.

EQ Discovery: Lizzie Lee (and Free Download “Shudder EP”)

Lizzie Lee

By Mandy Rogers

Budge up a bit Little Boots there's a "New (chic) In Town"!

We don’t get enough female electro pop musicians popping up on our radar do we? Well not of the type that play the keys, sing the sing and press the production buttons, like - but we do have it all brought together here in Lizzie Lee and I have to say she’s rather betcha bottom dollar very good at it.

Lizzie sent over her first full EP proper “Shudder” to me which has just been released and it’s pretty much occupied all of my attention all of today, since it’s chocka full of a high calibre of engaging electro pop tuneage that’s simply worthy of nothing but the stamped approval of EQ Discovery praise.

The four track EP delivers the hugeness of drum and bass dancibility, on “Burn For You” but it’s not so jungley crowded that Lizzie’s vocals get swamped by the thuds, her bright vocal tones shine over it.

The Little Boots likeness comes into full play on “Ex-Lover” and “Shut Me Down” both sassy cool and amazing dance tracks brimming with Hesketh electrophunk tendancies.

Completing in a latin wave fed by trance energy on title track “Shudder”.

Lizzie Lee is a talented one you should not want to miss out on. Really!  - and since she’s fresh, new as an electro pop artist the “Shudder EP” is in it’s entirety available as Free Download.

I’m sure this is one that more than a fair few of you should want to want to pop on your play lists. Play it to your friends and get them all in tizzy of excitement for Lizzie, much as me.
