Fuck. New Robyn Video Blips For "Cobrastyle" and "Eclipse"

Here we have Robyn playing strip poker with Perez in a new video for "Cobrastyle" - they sure are very buddy buddy these days. That's cool. Despite Perez being the "antichrist" to most bloggers, I think he did help her out a bit by big upping her. And I don't care, if there is a new video to "Cobrastyle" in the works - I'm all fucking for it.

And here's a little video blip for "Eclipse" - it's lovely. I love this song when Robyn performs it live.

Robyn Live At Radio One Big Weekend

Robyn_spacesuit

Our gurl Robyn wore her famous "Konichiwa Bitches" space suit and delivered a great set at last weekend's Radio One Big Weekend in Maidstone, Kent and you can watch some impressive video of it on this linkage here.  For those of you who haven't been to a Robyn show, you'll get a good idea of the energy and exuberance Little Miss Powerhouse brings to the stage.

Also this bit of news has me spinning around like Kylie in her hotpants...Robyn and Sam Sparro are doing a show together at the Astoria on June 8th!

Now that is a show that must not be missed EQs!

State City Disco Update

Statecitydisco

It's been awhile since I posted about State City Disco and I'm deee-lighted that there is some news in their electro disco camp. Not only have the hard working electro-punksters changed their line-up (see above) but they have also posted a new song on their MySpace page called "Take It All Easy" which is a 90's techno sleazy groover that I am absolutely loving.

Their ace track "Excitement" still gets me going every single time. Make sure you give it a whirl in our Press Play Bitch section if you haven't heard it yet.

Naked Highway Gets "Shorty The Pimp" On Us

Nakedhighway

Naked Highway have unveiled their next brilliant single "Shorty The Pimp" over on their MySpace page and it's as cool as ice.

I got a sneaky peeky at the video which is in post-production now and it's looking rather frisky as well. After riding the wave of their video to "Better Off Naked" being played for over two months on MTV's Logo station, Naked Highway aren't showing any signs of slowing down and "Shorty The Pimp" definitely brings it. Make sure you check it out now.

And just what the hell is Sy and lady friend doing to that poor poor disco ball anyways?

When Rob Diament of Temposhark Blogs...

I LOVE IT.

In fact, I think Rob Diament of Temposhark should make an official music blog himself as he really does have a stellar sense of what is truly amazing on the pop music scene these days.

Rob_temposhark

In today's "Rob-blog" on MySpace, Rob not only gave us some insight in to the recent US Temposhark shows, but he also posted a very rare music video to "It's Better To Have Loved" for all of us to admire.

Rob had this to say about the video:

"Some of you have been asking about the video I made in 2005 with the wonderful artist Justine Pearsall. Well Justine has managed to kindly upload it onto YouTube for you to see. The video was made for the single version of "It's Better To Have Loved" which is the Guy Sigsworth Mix. It's slightly different to the final album version but every bit as beautiful".

Let's take a lookski then...

Gorgeous. Thanks Rob.

Bim Doing An "Everything But The Girl"

Bim_garden_2

Remember when Everything But The Girl remixed their own down-tempo track "Missing" and it was a huge crossover success? Well EQ Royales Bim have done something similar and the results are rather amazing.

"I Dream This World" from Bim's brilliant EP of the same name has received the electro dance remix treatment and I really can't stop listening to it. You should check it out on their Facebook page now.

And I'll say it again until I am blue in the face - Bim are brilliant and you should be supporting them now. Check out their tunes on their MySpace page where you can find information on how to buy the EP which is one of music's best-kept secrets at the moment. I've been listening to them for over a year now and I can definitely see them being the new EBTG.

You've been told.

Darren Hayes To Guest Judge on Australian Idol

Darrenhayes_2

Via the ever-brilliant Unofficial Darren Hayes website.

Darren Hayes will be a guest judge on an upcoming Australian Idol episode.

In an interview with Syndey Confidential Darren said "As an Australian entertainer living in London I definitely have a soft spot for Aussies trying to make it overseas."

"Rather than judging people, I'm going to be looking for that little bit of magic that someone once saw in me."

New Robyn Video To "Who's That Girl"

Robyn_whosthatgirl

Check out Robyn's new video to "Who's That Girl", her impressive fifth single from her UK self-titled album and soon to be released US album.  The Robyn buzz is building up in America as little miss powerhouse seems to be all over at the moment in California in magazines and press.

We're really hoping that she'll go for an unprecedented sixth single in "Cobrastyle" as it's EQ's personal favourite from the record!  Make sure to check out Arjan's amazing podcast with Robyn as well!

My Thoughts on The B-52s "Funplex"

B52s

I was about 15 years old when The B-52s unleashed their stomping party anthem, "Love Shack" upon the world.  Still to this day, I go into a cataclysmic scenester head-bopping euphoria whenever that track ignites the airwaves. Those unforgettable lyrics from "Love Shack" and "Roam" from "Cosmic Thing" will always stay ingrained in my brain for an eternity.  Just call me a "Rock Lobster".

What I always loved about The B-52s is their ability to never take themselves too seriously, but somehow seem to create a distinct modern sound that frolics its way with ease around a crowded rock-n-roll playground.  It's never a question as to who exactly rules the musical sandbox when The B-52s come out to play.  When I heard that The B-52s were releasing new album "Funplex", I knew it was something that was long overdue.  The B-52s are back people and you should know that "Funplex" is really worth a listen if your one of those types that loves a "good time" and let's face it, who isn't.  This isn't Enya for the librarian types folks...this is serious party music.

Listening to "Funplex" is like taking a trip back to your teenage kicks.  Hanging out on the "Hot Corner" for your friends to come pick you up for a bit of retail delight and a spicy bite at the Food Court is exactly what you'll be doing upon one whirl of the new record.  All the while, being treated to astral electro rock delights in the way of "Juliet Of Spirits" and "Eyes Wide Open".  Your motor keeps on humming with listens to sexual innuendo-y tracks like "Ultraviolet" and "Deviant Ingredient" which goes on about stripped naked delirious daisy chaining and being overtaken by pink helicopters transforming you into a fully eroticized being.  Ooh La La La!

Even when the B-52s are trying to make a statement about fucked up politics in Washington, they are still having fun as proved on "Keep This Party Going".  And with a debut on the US album charts at Number 11, The B-52s are doing it right and by the sounds of it, having a ton of fun along the way.  Join the runaway party train again with the eternally youthful B-52s - you'll be ever so glad you did.  It's kinda like waking up the next morning after the best night of your life and realizing that "life is too short for hesitancy or uncertainty".  So party it up people and live a little.

Madonna & Elle Magazine

Madonna_elle

Holy Baps R Bakin Madonna - don't you look all busty in the pic above!

Madonna recently did a very cute interview with Elle Magazine where she discusses her family, her high-low fashion days and why she doesn't quite get the sports hubby Guy is into to.  Personally, I think Jujitsu sounds kinda hot - but that's just me.

Elle has put together a great little online package for you which consists of the interview, a Madonna fashion slide show, behind the scenes video of the cover shoot and a chance to win a copy of "Hard Candy".  Click here.  Flawless.

Welcome To The Private Party

Privateparty

Private have updated their Private Party MySpace profile with some fantasmagoric remix tracks that you should listen to right now!

The "Private Party" album is availale to purchase online and on Denmark iTunes at the moment and I highly recommend you give it a whirl if you can - it's loads of fun and if you are a hardcore Private fan (and I know you are), you'll really enjoy this latest project from electronica maestros Private.

I've been caught bopping my head about to this album on the tube and getting strange looks from little old ladies.

Another Simon Curtis Appreciation Day

Simon

I think it's high time for another Simon Curtis Appreciation Day!

Things with EQ Royale Simon Curtis have definitley been progressing and as soon as "Simon Says", I'll fill you in on some rather exciting news that could very well propel Simon Curtis as being a household name in America.  I'm bursting with fruit flavour to let EQs know what's happening and I will as soon as Mr. Curtis says it's ok!  But in the meantime, why don't you just take another little trip over to his MySpace page and listen to his stellar tracks "Another Heartache", "Put Your Makeup On", "Resist", and my personal favourite "Answer".  You may also want to check out Simon's cool new photos that he's uploaded today for all of you too!

It looks like 2008 could be a very good one for Mr. Curtis and you should be getting on-board his fan club now...

UPDATE:  Ok I talked to Simon today and the news is out, so here it is EQs...  Simon basically has been cast in a big movie production for Nickelodeon - think "High School Musical" but more "spectacular"!  Simon Curtis could very well be the new Zac Efron and needless to say, he was so excited to say the least - he found out the news on his birthday!  Looks like he could very well be a household name in 2008 which can only mean postive things for a potential album release!  Congratulations Simon from your fans and readers over here at EQ.

B-52's Video To "Funplex"

This was just released today - it's the premiere of the B-52's new video to "Funplex" and it's bloody amazing!

On a side note - I've been previewing their new album as well and it's one of the best albums I've heard all year. Not a duff track. A full album review coming soon!

Darin's "Insanity" - It's Insane

Darin

I've already went on and on about how much I loved EQ Royale Darin's last single "Desire", but make sure you check out another stellar pop-song of his called "Insanity".  It's already number two on the EQ Chart and although it's been out for awhile, I think you will like this song as well - it's quirky, electro-tinged and Darin just "brings it" to this track.

Here's the YouTubage - enjoy!

Are You Man Enough For Antigone?

Antigone2

It's full throttle for Antigone dear readers. She's had a total refurb of her Myspace pad and is welcoming you all in to come and preview her next single "More Man Than Man" which is clearly going to be a monster summer groover.

Produced and remixed by Shave, "More Man Than Man" is released on 16 June and promises to ignite the dancefloor. Check out those remix clips EQs - they are sounding uber hot.

EQ Chats with The Gadsdens: "It's An 80's Horror Movie Thing!"

Gadsdens2_2

The Gadsdens are something very very special.  It's no big surprise why they are on the up-and-up in the UK at the moment.  I first heard of The Gadsdens through Temposhark around New Years and found myself instantly hooked on their brilliant and haunting track "The Sailor Song" which made it's way around all the good music blogs.  These boys aren't just another "THE" band making a bunch of noise - they are deeper than that, more heartfelt if you will.

With just one listen to their cover of Bronski Beat's "Small Town Boy" I instantly became a hardcore fan - and having said that, the "beautifully awkward" Gadsdens now have a permanent little place here at EQ and are card carrying members of the EQ Royale now!  Which basically means I'll be going on and on about them for months.

I got a chance to chat with Jody and Simon from The Gadsdens about some of their brilliant tracks, the artists that influence them, the loveliness of Sia and how they made one of the Bronski Beat boys cry...enjoy.

Hey guys, welcome to EQ.  Now first of all, you really all aren't brothers are you?

Simon:  We’re not biological brothers, no.  If I had my way we would all be called The Neilsons (Simon’s surname) and live under one roof like some weird all male musical family!

Jody:  Thankfully, you wont have your way Simon and we will remain The Gadsdens and we will all live in separate houses in East London for all eternity!

Having said that, how did you all come together as The Gadsdens?

Jody:  Simon and I have known each other for years, but had separate musical projects going on.  About a year or so ago we were both at loose ends, musically speaking, so we decided to work together and the results have been quite magnificent.  David joined us on the drums last summer and we’ve had various input from other talented musicians along the way.

So you've described your sound as "Tracy Chapman on uppers and Stevie Nicks on downers".  I kinda feel like it's more of a melodic Anthony & The Johnsons meets Coldplay kinda thing.  Fair comparison or way off the mark?

Jody: I wrote that description at the beginning when I wasn’t sure what our sound would turn out like. I’ve always vocally been compared to Tracy and I used to shoot drugs up my posteria like Stevie, so it seemed like a natural comparison!  I love Anthony and the Johnsons, and I can see where you’re going with the Coldplay comparison.  A friend described us once as "beautifully awkward" – I really liked that description.

I have to admit, your cover of Bronksi Beat's "Small Town Boy" really made me sit up and listen.  I didn't even realise it was a cover until the chorus - that's how good it is!  Do you feel a special connection to that song?

Simon:  "Small Town Boy" was the first song we worked together on. It was recorded and produced very quickly for a film that my friend was directing.  We knew it was essential to keep the sentiment of the original; we just did our thing and by chance it suited the song really well.  I later contacted Steve Bronski and he said he almost cried when he heard it, which was incredibly humbling!

Jody:  We’ve never performed it live, I don’t think I could ever do it justice – I’m very proud of our recorded version though.

"The Sailor Song" is something very special - you can't help but get hooked into it's melody straight away.  I find myself humming it on the tube all the time.  How did this song come about?

Jody:  Oh gosh, I wrote the song about two years ago, my old band had just got dropped by a small record label and I was feeling very constrained and trapped musically – I think the song reflects that period.  I was feeling a bit useless and controlled – not necessarily by a person but by a situation. I played the song to Simon and he added the amazing piano riff and it just went from there – it just seemed to work and fall into place.  It’s one of my favourites, but I’m sure I’ll get sick of hearing it in years to come.

Gadsdens1

Probably my favourite song I've heard so far from you guys is "Trouble In Mind".  This song is a little eerie - was that intentional?

Simon: It’s an eighties horror movie thing!  I was totally inspired when doing the piano layers and had probably been watching "The Exorcist" or something. We aim to chill the bones!

Jody:  We co-wrote/produced this song with Barney JC.  We have some great ideas if this ever got made into a music video, churches and graveyards and deserted streets in New Orleans, and screams and blood and stuff – but it would all be very PG rating…

Sounds very cool if you ask me!  Now you guys are gigging non-stop for the next few months and were beyond great at Blow Up Metro.  How are you finding audience reactions to your music so far?

Simon:  Reactions have been amazing.  To start with we were anxious as to how our music would be received and are always continually surprised with the feedback we are given.  We always hope to put the audience through a range of emotions without completely bumming anyone out!  The start of our set is always the fun stuff though.

How is your first collection of tracks coming together?  Is an  EP or album in the works?  Any surprises in store?

Simon:  We have many new songs that we hope will make it onto the EP.  All are very different from each other.  Our production is also going to be very classically inspired with a whole range of instruments.  One track will be centered around the harpsichord and strings, very "Dangerous Liaisons"...

Jody:  We are very prolific which can be a nuisance sometimes because we tend to hop from one song to the other and abandon ideas for what we think is the next best song we’ve ever written.  We’ve been working with Sean McGhee for the past several months, he produced and co-wrote Temposhark’s new album "The Invisible Line", and he’s been amazing in de-constructing our songs and making us think about the colouring and structure of each new song we perform to him.  I really cannot wait to get into the studio and start recording these new tracks.

I have to admit, I've been stalking and re-visiting some of the fantastic artists you list as influences on your MySpace page.  Are there some other artists that you'd like to recommend for EQ readers listening pleasure?

Simon:  Oh yes, Vampire Weekend I love at the moment, we are very akin in style, and also Eugene McGuiness.  He is so young it scares me. He could be our honorary Gadsden son!

Jody:  I’m loving Sia’s new album. Her voice and lyrics are whipped cream to my ears and eyes.

Tell us about your songs "The Secret Diary Of A 27 Year Old" and "I Killed Love" - they sounded great live and we can't wait to hear the final mastered tunes.

Simon:  Both will hopefully have big brass and strings so looking forward to recording these for the EP. They are always fun to play as they just bounce along like good little pop tune should.

Jody: I always refer to "Secret Diary" as our Kelly Clarkson number, even though it really doesn’t sound anything like "Since U Been Gone". I love "I Killed Love", would it be narcissistic to have those words on an anchor tattooed on to my arm? It probably would, wouldn’t it?

Simon: Yes, Jody it would be lame.

Jody: Oh.

If you could do a collaboration with any artist - who would be your dream artist to work with?

Jody:  From a singing perspective I’d love to duet with Tori Amos or PJ Harvey – the obvious choices.  Oh and Sia too – if you know her, introduce us to her.  She’s smashing!

Simon:  Id love to work with the producer Marius de Vries.  He did wonders with Rufus Wainwright and every time I hear "Memphis Skyline" I get shivers.  He should definitely get in touch!

That's it - thanks guys.  Any parting words for EQ readers?

Jody: Just thanks to everybody who has been supportive of us over the past year or so, and here’s hoping 2008/09 is our year!

Big thanks to Jody and Simon for taking the time to answer some of my burning questions!  Let's take a look at them live shall we at Blow Up Metro.  If you get a chance to see them, definitely go out of your way do so!  You can hear all of these brilliant songs we're going on about now over on their MySpace page too - give them a whirl EQs!

The Secret Diary
Of A 27 Year Old

Robyn Releases "Who's That Girl" on April 14th

Whosthatgirl

You know you are doing pretty good when you get to release a 5th single from your album dontcha!

Robyn fans and EQ readers can delight in the news that "Who's That Girl" will be released on April 14th with a pleathora of remixes by Seamus Haji, Rex The Dog and DropThe Lime to name a few.  Little Miz Powerhouse (as I like to call her) has also been wowing the US audiences lately as she just headlined Perez Hilton's South By Southwest showcase.

Can Robyn do no wrong?

Private Live Performance and Your Invitation to The Private Party!

Private

Are you hooked on Private yet?  I thought so.  Although the band have rarely stepped out in front of the live audiences yet, here is their performance of "My Secret Lover" at the Zulu Awards.

One commenter named swelstead said it best.  Pyramid: Gary Numan.  Green laser: Frankie Goes to Hollywood.  Side-to-side dance moves: Robert Palmer.  Private: Priceless!

And since Popjustice is already talking about it, here's a link to the band's techno remix album project called "Private Party".

I've have been jamming out to "Man I'm A Man Machine" for awhile and it's like, totally addictive.  More info on the record release date as soon as I know!

Imogen Heap Went To Sunday School For Michael Jackson!

Mj_imogen

Imogen Heap recently took part in a "Thrillercast" on Michael Jackson's website in which she talks about her relation to Michael Jackson growing up.  Take a listen here to experience Imogen talking about how Michael Jackson influenced her as an artist and how she even wanted to attend Sunday school to be more like the gloved-one himself!  It's an interesting story!

I have to say, re-releasing "Thriller" was probably the best PR move Michael Jackson has done in years.  Everyone is reminiscing about Michael Jackson's good old days and in light of all the negative PR Wacko Jacko gets, it's really nice to see people remembering how this album shaped them growing up.  It's been 25 years since the release of "Thriller" but it still sounds as fresh and innovative now as it did back then.  And Imogen Heap does some crazy MJ sound-effects that you must check out on the linkage above!

Shamone!  (sp-but is it a word?)

Michael Jackson and Imogen Heap - we salute you.

PS - And on the subject of Jackson - might I also say that I fucking love Janet Jackson's new video and song to "Rock With U" which I just saw yesterday over at ModFab.  It's a return to form for Miss-Jackson-If-Ya-Nasty and I'm thrilled to death.  It's like 1987 all over again - Janet and Paula back in the mix.  Give it a whirl EQs!

Listen to Funkerman "Speed Up"

People are saying that Funkerman vocalist I-Fan sounds a bit like Justin Trousersnake. I would have to agree. Besides that, "Speed Up" is a smokin track that the great guys over at Tommorrow Never Knows want you all to know about it. We have a feeling that this track could explode.

What do you think?

Private Has Some Breaking Up To Do

EQ Royales Private wanted to share their hot new video for "We Got Some Breaking Up To Do" with all of you EQs.  The visual has everything in a pop video that I love including...

  • Synchronised dance moves!
  • Bright neon lights!
  • A confident woman behind the keyboard!
  • Some fancy cars!
  • A pinch of Prince for us retroheads!
  • Martinis!
  • Multi-tasking: not only does lead singer Thomas star in the video, he also directed it!

Private continue to have me spellbound with their third single - I so can't wait to see them live.

"We Got Some Breaking Up To Do" has totally made my rainy London day!

Thanks Private.

Eeek! The Best Clip You'll Hear All Day - It's Imogen Heap's "Not Now But Soon"

Imogenheap

Oooh - I am uber excited.  Head on over to Imogen Heap's MySpace page to hear a clip of her lovely new track "Not Now But Soon" which I've been talking about for quite awhile.  It's gorgeous and will be released very soon on March 18th!

Sigh - New Imogen Heap = Happy EQs!

Imogen also released some old footage of her bad self performing "Daylight Robbery" awhile back on tour. Check it out...I think you'll find she rocks a keytar just as bad-ass as Justin Shave does...

Welcome To The EQ Royale : Darin

Darin

Are you surprised?  Didn't think so.

Darin has been working me into a state of complete crazy tizzyness lately and after about two minutes of thought and a very interesting conversation with another EQ Royaler, he's been added to our exclusive list of artists quicker than contestants can get voted off American Idol.

Not only has his track "Desire" been one of THE best and most powerful in-yer-face electropop stompers I've ever heard in a long time, Darin continues to amaze me with the utterly incredible anthem track "Insanity" which is climbing the EQ Chart as we speak.

He's got style.  He's got sass and he rocks those red suspenders and hair gel like no other.

Welcome to the EQ Royale Darin.  Make yourself comfortable...

"Casey" by Darren Hayes Available to Download Now.

Darrenhayescasey_2

Darren Hayes epic single "Casey" isn't getting much radio airplay in the UK but that is hardly a reason not to buy it right this second via digital download from http://www.darrenhayes.dloadshop.com/. A firm fan favorite and the pinnacle of his live shows for the past year, "Casey" is in my opinion, Darren Hayes' career best recording...debunking my personal favorite "Like It Or Not" from "Spin".

It's one of the only songs that can easily move me to tears (he says in his best macho voice), joining the emotional ranks of such heart-wrenching classics like Sarah McLachlan's "I Will Remember You" , Madonna's "Nothing Fails" and Tracy Chapman's "Baby Can I Hold You" .  A stellar example of perfectly executed singer/songwriter skills, "Casey" deserves to be heard by everyone on this planet as it's a song that everyone can relate to in some way. Unless we show our support right now, the world may never have the pleasure of knowing this song as intimately as you EQ readers do.

Available in a plethora of digital formats on the link above, make sure you buy your copy and report back here to say that you've shown your support.  "Casey" may not be a chart hit, but the more we do to help promote it ourselves, the more the world will understand and come to know one of the music world's greatest talents, the man that is Darren Hayes.

Have you bought "Casey" yet?

PS - the original demo version is gorgeous...it's so uber cool to see how the original pop demo can turn into a lush pool of gorgeous electronica. And the HQ video is available on iTunes too - I'm loving it even more in full screen glory.

Welcome To The EQ Royale : Petros

Petros

We've been going through our favourite music lately and deciding which artists to add to the EQ Royale this month as we'll be adding 10 brilliant artists to our ever-so-exclusive roster and there is one artist that I have not written enough about and his name is Petros.

You may have seen his video to "Body Glow" in EQTV over the past year when we broke it and it is with a hearty hug that we welcome Petros to the EQ Royale. Why you ask?

  • His song "Utopia" is an electronic gem that I can't stop listening to. It's one of those open road electronica fantasias that leave you saying "Wow that's a great song".
  • Beauty and brains all rolled into one...Petros is currently attending Harvard University. How do you like them apples!
  • Petros can only go from strength-to-strength, his debut album "V.I.P." is already available on iTunes and it's a bloody good listen and a very good electro-pop debut for someone so young. Justin Timberlake could have quite easily recorded this album.
  • Title track "V.I.P." has so much attitude that you'll be singing it every time you're getting ready to go out for a big one.
  • Petros is a Boston boy with a little Greek heritage and what's not to love about that really?

Discover Petros for yourself here, but to get the full phat electro-pop experience, download "V.I.P." the album and "Body Glow" single by Petros now from iTunes.

Marsheaux Still Continues To Excite EQ

Marsheaux

The lovely electro ladies of Marsheaux still continue to excite me to no end. Right now I am grooving to the heavenly eurphoric beats of "Dream Of A Disco" a track from their quite listenable "Peek A Boo" album. I don't know exactly what it is about Marsheaux that I am so drawn to, but I really really into them. I've always been a sucker for striking women working a computer beat so I guess maybe that has something to do with it. Somehow I don't think I'm alone in that boat.

Anywho - if you haven't discovered Marsheaux yet for yourselves, you really need to download their stuff from iTunes pronto. And if their amazing sense for the the colour purple isn't enough ammunition for you to take listen to them, then I don't know what else is really. So sayeth EQ.

Marsheaux MySpace - Go. Now.

Temposhark Announce New Live Dates in London and New York

Temposhark

The boys from Temposhark announced some new live dates over on their MySpace which includes two new shows in London during April.  Colour me excited!  Who's coming along?!  You'd be pretty daft to miss them this go round because the boys are about to blow up - we're pretty hopeful of that.  Believe it or not, EQ hasn't had a chance to see them live yet either, so expect full reviews and maybe even some extras if you're lucky.

Although their ace album"The Invisible Line" is out on digital download now, you should wait (if you can) for the album to drop in physical format because it's "really purdy".  Oh what the hell, buy both, I'm sure the boys wouldn't mind.  And while you're doing that, to psyche you up before their upcoming London performances, make sure you check out their behind-the-scenes video footage of fantastic track "Blame" below.

Oh, we KNOW you read our little two-part interview with Rob too, right?

Final Night Of Darren Hayes' Side Two Tour

Verge01a

Last night's final show of Darren Hayes 'Side Two Tour' was utterly incredible.  Emotions ran high in the packed-out Islington Academy in London as hardcore fans from around the globe realized this may be a long time until Darren Hayes takes to the stage again.  There were smiles, there were tears, there even were a few fans that fainted from the experience, but all-in-all the show was one of Darren's career bests.

Darren looked really happy on stage - joking about live technical fuck-ups to the endless exclaimations of love he had for his guitarist Steve Young and the keytar maestro Justin Shave.  Treating the London fans to some setlist extras including 'Unlovable' and the energetic 'Carry On Amedeaus' (even the bouncers were enjoying this tune) it was a very special show to say the least.  Darren even paid tribute to Madonna by incorporating lyrics to 'Vogue' into 'Dirty' and 'Get Together' into 'So Beautiful'Leona Lewis even got a nod as Darren belted out the chorus to 'Bleeding Love' in one track.

After the show I chatted to Darren about what he had planned now that he's finished the last show and he was quite happy to say that he was looking forward to his downtime and getting to do a whole lot of nothing!  Hearing Darren say this was a joy because if there is any musician out there that deserves a bit of a break - it most certainly is Darren Hayes.  He has toured and promoted 'This Delicate Thing We've Made' tirelessly over the past year and looks forward to making more music for the legions of fans that embrace what he does.  It doesn't matter if radio or the music industry "get it" anymore - he's going to be making music for all of us who do.

And with that said, we look forward to seeing Darren again in the future when he has a new story to tell through his music in that fascinating way that he does it.  Thanks Darren for entertaining us all this past year with your beautiful record and generosity.

Make sure you buy the epic single 'Casey' when it drops on 3 March and if you want to relive the magic of 'The Time Machine Tour' make sure you pick up your copy when it drops on DVD soon.

4th Child Works His Superhero Mojo

4thchild

4th Child has been working on some new tracks after the dancefloor success of 'Now I've Found You' and the brilliant electronic ballad 'Lovers And Best Friends'.  One of his new tracks is called 'Superman' and at first we were a little skeptical of it, but it really grows on you after awhile.

If you're a fan of Christopher Reeves in all his red, white and blue jumpsuit glory, then you will enjoy this little video mashup which features the 4th Child song as it's soundtrack.

If you haven't yet discovered the edgy 4th Child, please take a look and listen over at his MySpace where you'll find a lot of his new songs, his official music videos and even some more video mashups.

Darren Hayes Side Two Tour - A Treat For The Hardcore Fans

Darren1

Last night we made our way up to Islington in North London to see the opening night of Darren Hayes 'Side Two Tour' and it was nothing short of incredible.  Around 300 hardcore fans (including ourselves) were already lined up from 4pm in the cold to make sure they got a place at the front of the stage for this extremely intimate show which is Darren's last leg of promotional effort before he goes on hiatus.

To truly enjoy this show, it's pretty safe to say that you have to be a real fan of his music to begin with as a fair amount of the songs in the setlist were older obscure tracks that haven't been performed live yet.  Having said that, we noticed that there were a lot of new faces at this show, proving that Darren and his epic double album 'This Delicate Thing We've Made' are still attracting new fans.

You know when Madonna goes on tour and she doesn't sing her hits, albeit just a few gems, well this tour for Darren is pretty much along the same lines - Don't expect to hear 'I Want You', 'On The Verge Of Something Wonderful' or 'Insatiable' on this tour EQs.  This one's for the hardcore fans.  Although the show isn't what you would usually come to expect from Darren, you still go away thinking, wow - that was beyond great.

Here are some highlights of the show - and please LOOK AWAY now if you don't want to read the SPOILERS.

  • The show opened with Darren performing 'Hero' - one of our favourite songs from 'The Tension And The Spark'.
  • 'Bombs Up In My Face' made a triumphant live return to the setlist, resurrected from Darren's earlier shows at The Soho Revue bar.
  • Darren debuted 'A Conversation With God' during this live set - a masterpiece and one of the best songs from the new album that sounds wonderful live.
  • '100 Challenging Things A Boy Can Do' and 'Sense Of Humour' was just stunning.
  • Staying true to his penchant for resurrecting old Savage Garden songs - Darren gave us a treat in the way of 'Gunning Down A Romance' which featured some amazing guitar work by Steve Young.
  • Proving once again (as if we needed more proof) that Justin Shave is an electronic god, 'Setting Sun' was performed solely on Justin's 'keytar'.  It was mesmerizing to witness an entire song with funky beats and blips coming out of just a keytar and Shave's fingers.  Magnificent.
  • 'Random Blinking Light' was a performed to many o fan's delight.  It was really cool to see most of the faces singing along to this obscure track from 'Tension And The Spark' era.
  • 'Dirty' also got an electro makeover which was just flawless - I never really cared too much for this early track from 'Spin', but hearing this new version of it really got me excited.
  • Darren did of course sing his new song 'Casey' not once, but twice.  The crowd got a little over zealous with their thunderous clapping that it threw even Darren off, so he had to sing it twice being that it was being recorded for exclusive single download.
  • 'I Don't Care' and 'So Beautiful' closed out the show as the encore with 'So Beautiful' being remixed into a danceable diddy which sent everyone home on a high.

By all means, the above isn't a complete setlist, but it's best if we leave a few things as a surprise for anyone who is lucky enough to have scored tickets for the rest of the tour.  Something tells us that the show may change slightly a little on the way as this tour almost seems like an little experiment for Darren.  It's no surprise either a lot that the hardcore fans have bought tickets for almost every performance.  We'll be back to see the show on 24th February to see how it has evolved from opening night.

Darren had this to say today about his unusual yet interesting setlist:

"In many ways as a show it reminds me of what ‘The Tension and The Spark’ was as an album.  A bit uncomfortable but utterly pivotal."

All in all - a hugely relaxed and euphoric atmosphere with a healthy dose of intimacy.  The show almost felt like a reward.  The perfect send-off for Darren and his fans as he "goes away for awhile" as he stated onstage.

Our only question is this - What if 'Casey' becomes a huge hit when it is released in March?  Darren may have to get on the promotional trail a bit again if the song so deservedly takes off...and we wouldn't be surprised if it's just as popular as Robyn's sleeper hit 'With Every Heartbeat' was and still is.

We can only wait and see.

'Casey' - Epic Single Release Details

Webpamphletcopyb_3

Darren Hayes is going above and beyond a normal single release of 'Casey' on 3 March by offering his UK fans a live recording of 'Casey' from each night on his UK Side Two Tour which kicks off this Sunday in London. That's NINE different live versions of 'Casey' that are being released as part of the single. Very innovative we say! And if that wasn't enough, the single is also being released in a variety of digital formats as well on iTunes and via www.darrenhayes.com for the serious Darren Hayes fan.

'Casey' is quite easily one of the best songs of our time. I can't think of a better song of the moment that defines the word 'epic' to a tee. The first time I heard it, I couldn't quite believe how good it was. When I heard it for the first time in glorious HQ on the album, I cried like a baby...it's that good peeps. We all have to make this single release a hit for Darren Hayes - it's our EQ duty. Please support quality independent electronic music by buying 'Casey' when it comes out and if you haven't yet purchased Darren's incredible double album 'This Delicate Thing We've Made' yet then, well I can't even speak to you.

And to close - LOVIN the Star Wars-esqe artwork.

EQ Interview with Private : "Some Of It Was Too Silly And Some Of It Was Too Dirty"...

Private

So there is no doubt about it. Danish pop band Private are hot at the moment and on the up and up. Having released one of my hands down favourite albums late last year entitled 'My Secret Lover', Private are ready and set to take the pop world by storm having already garnered major success in Denmark and winning the hearts of music bloggers in the US and UK and beyond. EQ got a chance to chat to Thomas Troelsen from Private about their music, the Danish pop immersion, their ideas for live shows and "that girl" who speaks novels of attitude in the title track...

So how long have you been together as a band? It seems that you popped up overnight on the pop music blogs and suddenly everyone was talking about you!

It's been great seeing the reactions around the world. We actually didn't want international attention before our debut album 'My Secret Lover' was released worldwide, but I guess it was easier to control before the rise of the internet. I've been working on the record since 2005, and Asger and Tanja came to the studio in late 2006 to record their parts.

So what is the pop and electronic music scene like in Denmark? You've had some real success there haven't you?

I don't think there's a Danish scene per se, but I think we have some truly original bands like Junior Senior, Raveonettes and I Scream Ice Cream.

With Alphabeat building up momentum along with yourselves in the UK, is Denmark the new pop music breeding ground like Sweden is?

I really like Alphabeat's songs and I love how their personalities fit their music, but I don't think that there's a momentum in Danish pop music. I think that both Private and Alphabeat want to be a part of the international scene, not just the Danish scene.

There is an obvious connection to Prince and Madonna in your music. Was this intentional or did it just kind of happen that way?

I've been a record collector since I was thirteen, and therefore I like a lot of obscure music, but I guess my favorite music was made in the mid 80s when the standard and competition were at their best. I'm a perfectionist and I can work for hours on a shaker, tambourine or finding the right drum fills for a song. Nothing on our record is a coincidence except some of the actual songwriting. I believe that's how 'Rumors', 'Purple Rain', 'Bad' and 'Like a Prayer' were made too.

Private8

'My Secret Lover' is so fresh sounding, yet heavily retro tinged - how did this song come about?

It came to me at my home recording studio when playing my piano. Suddenly, all the words, notes and chords came out. Don't ask me why. Most the choruses on the album are written like that – Ooops, that was pretty good! When something comes to me, I record it on a voice recorder so I won’t forget about it. In the case of 'My Secret Lover', I recorded it about a year later.

How did it feel to hear your songs on the radio for the first time?

It's always great to hear your own music on radio and in nightclubs, but I don't get as excited as when I was 15. Nevertheless, it's definitely a great feeling. My favorite thing though, is when someone really old or really young comes to me and tells me they like our music.

And who is that gal doing the speaking bit in 'My Secret Lover'? You know, the bit where she goes "I want a real man, I don’t have time for this shit..." so flawless.

It's a girl from New York we tracked down because we were looking for a sexy voice. I think we recorded about 40 minutes from her, but some of it was too silly and some was too dirty.

You have a bit of a gothic and dramtic look to your imagery - What's that all about? Lots of black and white, we love it!

We don't think of it as being goth at all. I see it more like a fine British gentleman thing. I think it goes very well with our music and personalities.

You've been nominated for a ton of awards at the Danish Music Awards this year? How do you feel about that? You gonna win or not? What's your competition like?

That's great. We never thought we would have this much success in Denmark. We have some pretty good competition. To be honest, I wouldn't mind if we don't win anything as an award goes to The Raveonettes.

Tell us a little bit about 'Crucify My Heart'. Based on real life events? Who's the inspiration behind that tune? She sounds like a real piece of work!

The chorus was written in real time and the strong words pretty much set the scene for the rest of the song, so it's not a Thomas Troelsen biography, but i definitely had some girls in mind. This was actually the hardest song to write, and I had a really hard time finding the right verse for it.

Any plans to go on tour? What can we expect from a Private show? I personally am expecting lots of neon on black...loads of keyboardage...synchronized dance moves ala Robert Palmer, flinging of the hair...that sort of thing...

The only show that we have done so far went extremely well. The scene was at the old stock market in Copenhagen built in 1735 by King Christian the 4th. We don't want to perform at festivals and venues. We want to bring our fans to more aesthetic places.

So which one of you is the real 'Killer On The Dancefloor' ? Be honest.

Definitely Tanja. She's always rocking it. I rarely go out, but when I do I'm usually in a pretty good dancing mood!

Private4

Any plans to release the album in the UK or the states at the moment?

Yes, there’s been interest from various UK and US labels. We’re beginning to look at who might be the best partner.

'That Boy Is Hurting You' is such a beautiful track - how did this one come about?

You know when one of your friends is with a complete idiot, and you don't have the guts to tell her that? Well this is a story about just that.

Well that's it! Thanks for chatting with us Thomas. Any parting words for the EQ readers?

Bring out the gentleman!

And so we shall!  And just in case you have yet to be turned into a fan of the electronic pop maestros themselves, take a look and a listen to the below YouTubage and make sure to check them out on MySpazz.

CASEY - Is Here!

The verdict : Such a beautiful music video. I know a fair amount of people were up in arms about the teaser but I have to say that Darren Hayes couldn't have done a better video for 'Casey'. It totally encapsulates the feeling of wanting to escape into something bigger and better as children of the 80's or any decade for that matter. Darren has an extraordinary way of visualizing the past in a way that still looks fresh today. I get it. I love it. Thanks Darren.

Robyn's Boyfriend Is A Cage Fighter and Full O Muscles- Watch OUT!

Robyn is the picture of cuteness (as usual) in her recent appearance on 'Nevermind The Buzzcocks' and she even survived the jabs that Simon Amstell gave her very well, with giggles and smiles. Maybe Simon is afraid of her big muscled cage-fighting boyfriend! Bless.

EQ Interview with Temposhark Part 2 : "I Really Like Madonna, I Know Some People Slag Her Off, But I Don't Know Why Really..."

Temposhark2

Welcome to Part 2 of our interview with Robert Diament of Temposhark. In this part Rob talks about touring, some of his favourite Madonna albums, blogging and even takes on some EQ reader questions! In case you missed Part 1 last week, make sure you click here.

'Winters Coming' is such a beautiful electronic track - can you talk a little more about how this track came about?

Even though it's the last song on the album, its probably my favourite song on the CD! I wrote it with Guy Sigsworth in his London studio one day. He was playing on the harpsichord and I just sang. I'd written the opening phrase of it on my keyboard, and a few pages of a related poem, the previous weekend, and just took that with me to Guy's. It's a song about dreading winter, knowing you have to move on from losing a loved one and get on with your life.

So we have an EQ reader question from Michelle in Florida, she asks - "In the behind the scenes 'Blame' video footage, you all appear to be really good friends and have a marvelous sense of humor. Is this typical of how the four of you get along with each other?

Oh yes! I think that video was filmed at RAK studios in London when we were recording one day. We all get on very well, it's nice, we're a bit like brothers. Mark and Mathis make me laugh so much. Mark is particularly comic, he likes to wind us up!

Any plans for any other music videos coming up?

Yes we will be making another video soon! It just has to be the right idea. That's a side I'm really looking forward to experimenting with in the future.

We have another reader question from Maria in Venice, she asks - "During the last year you've travelled a lot, you've brought your music to the US and Canada, and you've visited Cyprus, Turkey, Italy, France... Have you felt inspired to write new music while you were surrounded by these new realities, and how have these places affected your writing, if they have?

Yes I always write when I travel. I've just got back today from Berlin in fact and I'm considering writing some of the next album in Berlin. I have some friends there with cool studios. I caught up with my friends from Noblesse Oblige who are a cool punk rock band over there and also saw Joel from The Hidden Cameras there…there's a lot of great music stuff happening there right now and I love the atmosphere. I'm also addicted to France, I'd love to live and work in Paris at some point soon. Touring is always amazing too. The US and Canada tour in 2007 blew my mind. It was a total dream come true. I've actually written loads of new songs since that tour, I have about 20 or so ideas plus about 8 songs ready to be recorded for the second Temposhark CD, most of which were written just after travelling…

So Rob, you recently just finished guest blogging for Arjan Writes. How important do you feel blogging and social communities like MySpace and Facebook are relative to your music and making it successful?

I think blogs are amazing. I love their instant nature. I love the way everyone can express themselves and their thoughts on the world. I try to read as many as I can when I have the time. Some of them are so funny! MySpace has really helped us to connect with our fans and make new fans. We got selected by MySpace Music in both US and UK who put us on their front page and this led to so many new people discovering us. It's amazing how powerful the Internet has become, and how much smaller the world is. I don't think we'd ever have been this successful over in the US had it not been for the Internet, digital music, stores like iTunes, blogs like yours and Arjan's opening up new doors for us. It's brilliant!

Any plans to tour in 2008? What can we expect from a Temposhark show? Believe it or not, I haven't seen you live yet! More London dates - I demand it!

YES! I promise. It brings the album to life. Live drums, live bass, live keys and in 2008 we're planning on a few acoustic tracks and even me singing alone at piano, you'll see! We're planning a tour right now so keep an eye out!

So I noticed you have covered Madonna's hit 'Like A Prayer' in some live footage. Why this song? Any other Lady M songs you'd like to cover? Are there any other musicians or artists that heavily influence you?

I really like Madonna and other pop legends like Prince. I know some people slag her off, but I don't know why really. She fascinates me, and always has done. I love songs like 'Papa Don't Preach' but the 'Like a Prayer' album is really amazing. I like her when she opens up and explores her inner self. I actually like 'American Life' a lot.

Me too, one of her most underrated albums actually...

Some of the songs on there are beautiful, and Mirwais is a great producer. But I also have a side to me that loves less pop stuff like Joni Mitchell, Jeff Buckley, Tori Amos, Laura Nyro, Regina Spektor, David Bowie, when I was in my teens I was really into Suede and Skunk Anansie.

What have you found to be the main difference between playing to US crowds versus UK crowds during your recent tours?

US crowds tend to interact more with you. I loved it when people on the US tour would just shout things at you. Like, "YES! YOU ROCK!" or "PLAY 'PARIS'!!!!" which really took me by surprise! And I actually had conversations with a few people, we haven't had that as much in the US. The thing I found most surprising about touring the US was that most of the audiences knew the lyrics to our songs! It was madness! I mean we haven't even had an album out yet, that's the power of the net I guess. Very cool!

What's it like working with Melnyk? Any more planned colloborations with artists from the brilliant Gaymonkey label?

Melnyk is really cool. I respect him a lot because he runs his own label too and has done really well for himself. I loved his Pet Shop Boys remix recently. We're talking about writing together, I'm up for that! I think we'd work well in the studio, let's see…

When I think of other artists that you remind me of, Nine Inch Nails immediatley spring to mind. Fair comparison or completley off the mark?

Nine Inch Nails? Wow that's cool. I like Trent Reznor a lot. I think his voice is great and his energy. So to be compared to them is cool! He's someone I'd love to work with actually, now you've said that. I only discovered NIN in 2005, I was a late fan of theirs, as I grew up listening to people like Kate Bush and Tori Amos, lots of female voices.

So that's it - thanks Robert. Any parting words for the readers of EQ?

I hope you enjoy the album! If you come see us on tour, make sure you stay after the show because it's always nice to meet up after a show!

When EQ Royale Collide...

Simondarren_2

Take a look at the total cuteness of EQ Royale Simon Curtis and Darren Hayes striking a pose together at one of Darren's recent gigs in the states. This picture is just so EQ, we love it.

We already know you are a fan of Darren Hayes, but if you, dear reader, still aren't a fan of Simon Curtis' music, then you must stop what you are doing right now a
