Another Simon Curtis Appreciation Day

Simon

I think it's high time for another Simon Curtis Appreciation Day!

Things with EQ Royale Simon Curtis have definitley been progressing and as soon as "Simon Says", I'll fill you in on some rather exciting news that could very well propel Simon Curtis as being a household name in America.  I'm bursting with fruit flavour to let EQs know what's happening and I will as soon as Mr. Curtis says it's ok!  But in the meantime, why don't you just take another little trip over to his MySpace page and listen to his stellar tracks "Another Heartache", "Put Your Makeup On", "Resist", and my personal favourite "Answer".  You may also want to check out Simon's cool new photos that he's uploaded today for all of you too!

It looks like 2008 could be a very good one for Mr. Curtis and you should be getting on-board his fan club now...

UPDATE:  Ok I talked to Simon today and the news is out, so here it is EQs...  Simon basically has been cast in a big movie production for Nickelodeon - think "High School Musical" but more "spectacular"!  Simon Curtis could very well be the new Zac Efron and needless to say, he was so excited to say the least - he found out the news on his birthday!  Looks like he could very well be a household name in 2008 which can only mean postive things for a potential album release!  Congratulations Simon from your fans and readers over here at EQ.

Leaving On A Jet Plane...

It's Friday EQs!  That means it's time to start thinking about what you are doing this weekend.  As for EQ, I'll be packing up me things for a two week jont in San Francisco and trying to cram in as much quality time as I can with my Gerilicous in the next 24 hours before getting on the plane.  I don't know how much posting I'll be doing this weekend, so to tide you over here are some Random Rants and diddies that have been floating around in me inbox for you.

Go get interactive on the EQ Facebook Group while I am away - we have some fun little conversations going on over there and now we are 120+ members strong!

  • How massive is "Cry For You" by September blowing up in the UK?!  It's going large.  I'll be putting together some questions for September (aka Petra) very soon, so if you have any questions you'd like me to ask her - just email em on in!
  • I'm totally in love with The B-52's album "Funplex".  It is a must-listen.  Go out now and buy it on CD or digitally if you can.  It's like taking a kitsch-rock road-trip around the cosmos!  Seriously people, I haven't had this much fun listening to a rock album in a long time!
  • Electro popster Stuart Glover has a new video out to his track "Fatal Attraction".  Go check it out.  Stuart's hair is just too perfect - EQ is jealous.
  • REMINDER: Temposhark's "The Invisible Line" CD is out now.  You must go buy it or download it.  If you haven't yet, well you are not worthy of reading this blog!  Just kidding - but seriously, go do it now!  You can even win an iPod and prizes galore over on their MySpace page!
  • Check out Mark Picchiotti's new single called "Turn It Up" that just hit #1 on the UK Music Week Upfront Club Chart.  Discover the bouncy fun house track over on his MySpace page now.
  • And speaking of some more bouncy fun, check out "John Travolta" by BLOW-UP over on their MySpace page as well.
  • EQ reader Ema suggests you take a look at D@ve B. He's a singer/songwriter from Italy and has some great electronic tracks.  You can even download a few of them on his MySpace.
  • And finally, of course how great was Sergey's little mini-club tour of the UK?!  I am still on a high about it to tell you the truth.  Hopefully Sergey will return to London in May when his album "TV Show" drops but in the meantime - here's a little video message from him.  You might also find EQ and Gerilicous in this little piccie if you look hard enough...

Sergey - Live At London's Heaven

Sergey_heq

Last night I finally got to see Sergey perform in Londontown and it was beyond amazing.  I have been waiting for Sergey's London debut for quite awhile since I first stumbled upon his stellar cover of Johnny Hates Jazz smash hit "Shattered Dreams" last July.  Upon one listen to that fab pop tune and some swift research on the web shortly after, I found a genuine pop star that ticked all the right pop buttons and I couldn't wait to pen fantastic about him on this blog for readers worldwide.  I swore I wouldn't let EQ turn into a Sergey fansite, but sometimes the excitement over pop brands that work just takes over and well, you end up getting a lot of news about Sergey as a result.

Sergey is probably one of the only artists that could keep me up until 3am on a "school night" as they say.  Taking to the stage at 1:30am to a crowd of usual London eclectics, party pimpers, dragsters, "ModFabs" and Russian hardcore fans, Sergey and his troupe of dancers gave an electrifying performance of new single "Girlfriend", "Shattered Dreams" and very surprisingly, "Flyer (Under Fire)" - which I didn't really expect to hear, but very happy he chose to perform this for the London audience.  I couldn't help but think that "Flyer" would work very well as a single in the UK.  Crowd reaction to this song was nothing short of mesmerizing.  You could just look at their faces and knew what they were thinking...

"This Russian guy has something".

Expect young Londoners to be visiting the web and Googling "Sergey" today with impatient enthusiasm just like I did months ago.  More fun snaps of Sergey's performance last night can be found in the official EQ Facebook page over on  http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=11922726785.

Thanks to everyone at Style Records and to Sergey for making a rather mediocre Wednesday night a total blast!  You'll be hearing a lot more about Sergey on EQ as we get closer to his album release in the UK in May.

B-52's Video To "Funplex"

This was just released today - it's the premiere of the B-52's new video to "Funplex" and it's bloody amazing!

On a side note - I've been previewing their new album as well and it's one of the best albums I've heard all year. Not a duff track. A full album review coming soon!

And Sergey Mania Hit The UK

Camden1

Sergey has arrived in the UK peeps and has been thrilling crowds in Surrey, Romford and Bournemouth with his mini set of "Girlfriend", "Shattered Dreams" and "Fake". The crowds are really into what Sergey is doing and reactions have been VERY positive.

Here's a little piccie of Sergey in Camden Town in London. Tomorrow night is the final night of the UK mini-tour and EQ will be there to bring you all the final night dish from the legendary Heaven nightclub!

Darin's "Insanity" - It's Insane

Darin

I've already went on and on about how much I loved EQ Royale Darin's last single "Desire", but make sure you check out another stellar pop-song of his called "Insanity".  It's already number two on the EQ Chart and although it's been out for awhile, I think you will like this song as well - it's quirky, electro-tinged and Darin just "brings it" to this track.

Here's the YouTubage - enjoy!

MySpace Discovery : Christian George

Christian_2

His name is Christian George people.

Christian is energetically bursting on the pop scene with his sexually-charged electro song "Strangers" which you can hear in it's full glory right now over at his MySpace hangout.

The buzz around "Strangers" is starting to really build. Paying homage to the classic Laura Brannigan track "Self Control" in his steamy debut single, it's no surprise that people are listening and taking notice of Christian. With his striking good looks and a killer debut track under his belt, Christian obviously knows how to make all the girls and boys swoon. And that is what he has his sights set on.

Christian's album is coming out very soon as well and here is what he had to say about the collection of hot tracks he has put together:

"Half of my songs are about sleeping with somebody and the others are about heartbreak. This album is very black or white. I’m either making you scream or you’re making me cry."

Deee-lightful. I look forward to screaming with Christian George. Do you?

Are You Man Enough For Antigone?

Antigone2

It's full throttle for Antigone dear readers. She's had a total refurb of her Myspace pad and is welcoming you all in to come and preview her next single "More Man Than Man" which is clearly going to be a monster summer groover.

Produced and remixed by Shave, "More Man Than Man" is released on 16 June and promises to ignite the dancefloor. Check out those remix clips EQs - they are sounding uber hot.

MySpace Discovery : Jamie Jo

Jaimejo

Say hello to the sexy and sultry Jamie Jo.  For the past week, there has been one dance tune that has dominated my iPod - and that track is Jamie Jo's provocative new electronic single, appropriately titled, "You Turn Me On" which features the legendary silky backing vocals of Barry Gibb.

With one listen to "You Turn Me On" you are immediately transported to an era of disco-rock cool, Blondie infused attitude meshed with pieces of shattered glass from Madonna's mirrorball.  It's utterly catchy and you'll be happy to have discovered Jamie Jo today on EQ.

Jamie Jo's online presence is just beginning to ramp up so make sure you run over to her official MySpace to hear for yourself what I'm going on about in today's post.

In an excerpt from her bio, Jamie Jo describes why she is in love with electro music...

"There's something special about electro, the sound," Jamie Jo shares. "I think that it really touches your senses. And I want to portray that and bring people a sultry, sexy feeling through my music."

That is perfectly fine by me Jamie Jo.

With all this excitement building up around her, you can bet EQ will be more than curious about her upcoming album release "In Violet".  Visit her official website for more Jamie Jo news and information on this rising electro pop starlet.

Ming & Ping New Video For "Legends Of Nothing"

Check out the stunning new video from Ming & Ping called "Legends Of Nothing" that premiered yesterday on the web. Directed by Brian Williams, this little piece of film is a fantastic piece of work that showcases the San Francisco duo's electric stylings quite nicely if you ask me.

On the duo's website, the video is described as being "a loosely constructed narrative following identical twins Ming & Ping as they negotiate the violent boundary between sleep and wake, internal and external struggles".

Uber cool.

EQ Chats with The Gadsdens: "It's An 80's Horror Movie Thing!"

Gadsdens2_2

The Gadsdens are something very very special.  It's no big surprise why they are on the up-and-up in the UK at the moment.  I first heard of The Gadsdens through Temposhark around New Years and found myself instantly hooked on their brilliant and haunting track "The Sailor Song" which made it's way around all the good music blogs.  These boys aren't just another "THE" band making a bunch of noise - they are deeper than that, more heartfelt if you will.

With just one listen to their cover of Bronski Beat's "Small Town Boy" I instantly became a hardcore fan - and having said that, the "beautifully awkward" Gadsdens now have a permanent little place here at EQ and are card carrying members of the EQ Royale now!  Which basically means I'll be going on and on about them for months.

I got a chance to chat with Jody and Simon from The Gadsdens about some of their brilliant tracks, the artists that influence them, the loveliness of Sia and how they made one of the Bronski Beat boys cry...enjoy.

Hey guys, welcome to EQ.  Now first of all, you really all aren't brothers are you?

Simon:  We’re not biological brothers, no.  If I had my way we would all be called The Neilsons (Simon’s surname) and live under one roof like some weird all male musical family!

Jody:  Thankfully, you wont have your way Simon and we will remain The Gadsdens and we will all live in separate houses in East London for all eternity!

Having said that, how did you all come together as The Gadsdens?

Jody:  Simon and I have known each other for years, but had separate musical projects going on.  About a year or so ago we were both at loose ends, musically speaking, so we decided to work together and the results have been quite magnificent.  David joined us on the drums last summer and we’ve had various input from other talented musicians along the way.

So you've described your sound as "Tracy Chapman on uppers and Stevie Nicks on downers".  I kinda feel like it's more of a melodic Anthony & The Johnsons meets Coldplay kinda thing.  Fair comparison or way off the mark?

Jody: I wrote that description at the beginning when I wasn’t sure what our sound would turn out like. I’ve always vocally been compared to Tracy and I used to shoot drugs up my posteria like Stevie, so it seemed like a natural comparison!  I love Anthony and the Johnsons, and I can see where you’re going with the Coldplay comparison.  A friend described us once as "beautifully awkward" – I really liked that description.

I have to admit, your cover of Bronksi Beat's "Small Town Boy" really made me sit up and listen.  I didn't even realise it was a cover until the chorus - that's how good it is!  Do you feel a special connection to that song?

Simon:  "Small Town Boy" was the first song we worked together on. It was recorded and produced very quickly for a film that my friend was directing.  We knew it was essential to keep the sentiment of the original; we just did our thing and by chance it suited the song really well.  I later contacted Steve Bronski and he said he almost cried when he heard it, which was incredibly humbling!

Jody:  We’ve never performed it live, I don’t think I could ever do it justice – I’m very proud of our recorded version though.

"The Sailor Song" is something very special - you can't help but get hooked into it's melody straight away.  I find myself humming it on the tube all the time.  How did this song come about?

Jody:  Oh gosh, I wrote the song about two years ago, my old band had just got dropped by a small record label and I was feeling very constrained and trapped musically – I think the song reflects that period.  I was feeling a bit useless and controlled – not necessarily by a person but by a situation. I played the song to Simon and he added the amazing piano riff and it just went from there – it just seemed to work and fall into place.  It’s one of my favourites, but I’m sure I’ll get sick of hearing it in years to come.

Gadsdens1

Probably my favourite song I've heard so far from you guys is "Trouble In Mind".  This song is a little eerie - was that intentional?

Simon: It’s an eighties horror movie thing!  I was totally inspired when doing the piano layers and had probably been watching "The Exorcist" or something. We aim to chill the bones!

Jody:  We co-wrote/produced this song with Barney JC.  We have some great ideas if this ever got made into a music video, churches and graveyards and deserted streets in New Orleans, and screams and blood and stuff – but it would all be very PG rating…

Sounds very cool if you ask me!  Now you guys are gigging non-stop for the next few months and were beyond great at Blow Up Metro.  How are you finding audience reactions to your music so far?

Simon:  Reactions have been amazing.  To start with we were anxious as to how our music would be received and are always continually surprised with the feedback we are given.  We always hope to put the audience through a range of emotions without completely bumming anyone out!  The start of our set is always the fun stuff though.

How is your first collection of tracks coming together?  Is an  EP or album in the works?  Any surprises in store?

Simon:  We have many new songs that we hope will make it onto the EP.  All are very different from each other.  Our production is also going to be very classically inspired with a whole range of instruments.  One track will be centered around the harpsichord and strings, very "Dangerous Liaisons"...

Jody:  We are very prolific which can be a nuisance sometimes because we tend to hop from one song to the other and abandon ideas for what we think is the next best song we’ve ever written.  We’ve been working with Sean McGhee for the past several months, he produced and co-wrote Temposhark’s new album "The Invisible Line", and he’s been amazing in de-constructing our songs and making us think about the colouring and structure of each new song we perform to him.  I really cannot wait to get into the studio and start recording these new tracks.

I have to admit, I've been stalking and re-visiting some of the fantastic artists you list as influences on your MySpace page.  Are there some other artists that you'd like to recommend for EQ readers listening pleasure?

Simon:  Oh yes, Vampire Weekend I love at the moment, we are very akin in style, and also Eugene McGuiness.  He is so young it scares me. He could be our honorary Gadsden son!

Jody:  I’m loving Sia’s new album. Her voice and lyrics are whipped cream to my ears and eyes.

Tell us about your songs "The Secret Diary Of A 27 Year Old" and "I Killed Love" - they sounded great live and we can't wait to hear the final mastered tunes.

Simon:  Both will hopefully have big brass and strings so looking forward to recording these for the EP. They are always fun to play as they just bounce along like good little pop tune should.

Jody: I always refer to "Secret Diary" as our Kelly Clarkson number, even though it really doesn’t sound anything like "Since U Been Gone". I love "I Killed Love", would it be narcissistic to have those words on an anchor tattooed on to my arm? It probably would, wouldn’t it?

Simon: Yes, Jody it would be lame.

Jody: Oh.

If you could do a collaboration with any artist - who would be your dream artist to work with?

Jody:  From a singing perspective I’d love to duet with Tori Amos or PJ Harvey – the obvious choices.  Oh and Sia too – if you know her, introduce us to her.  She’s smashing!

Simon:  Id love to work with the producer Marius de Vries.  He did wonders with Rufus Wainwright and every time I hear "Memphis Skyline" I get shivers.  He should definitely get in touch!

That's it - thanks guys.  Any parting words for EQ readers?

Jody: Just thanks to everybody who has been supportive of us over the past year or so, and here’s hoping 2008/09 is our year!

Big thanks to Jody and Simon for taking the time to answer some of my burning questions!  Let's take a look at them live shall we at Blow Up Metro.  If you get a chance to see them, definitely go out of your way do so!  You can hear all of these brilliant songs we're going on about now over on their MySpace page too - give them a whirl EQs!

The Secret Diary
Of A 27 Year Old

Robyn Releases "Who's That Girl" on April 14th

Whosthatgirl

You know you are doing pretty good when you get to release a 5th single from your album dontcha!

Robyn fans and EQ readers can delight in the news that "Who's That Girl" will be released on April 14th with a pleathora of remixes by Seamus Haji, Rex The Dog and DropThe Lime to name a few.  Little Miz Powerhouse (as I like to call her) has also been wowing the US audiences lately as she just headlined Perez Hilton's South By Southwest showcase.

Can Robyn do no wrong?

Electrowoman: frYars' Green Eyes Are Not A Problem Of Mine...

Fryars

It’s probable you may not have been acquainted with London songster Ben Garrett AKA FrYars before. I stumbled upon "Olive Eyes" from his soon to be released EP "Perfidy" (out March 17th) on one of My-Spaceland adventures last week. Let’s just say that once my Extra Virgin "Olive Eyes" cherry was popped, every subsequent listening experience has been down right pleasurable.

This melodious offering isn’t indicative of FrYars other material. If you were to put essences of Patrick Wolf, Nick Cave and Royksopp into a great big melting pot – stir add a slosh of "Radioheadness" - well then you would have something that resembles the electronica/alternative/Indie stew that FrYars is really all about.

If I’m honest it’s a hotpot that’s in need of a little bit more seasoning of keyboard wizardry, but that’s just my preference – as I feel "Olive Eyes" is far superior.  Wanna here some of the FrYars broth for yourself? Well slide your cursor over here to be teleported over the the space page in a mere soupcon.

For yet more FrYars tuck, get yourselves down to one of Goldfrapp’s show's in June - where this maestro of keys is being served up as the "Frapp’s" entrée. (Yeah I know the pun’s are real real bad but I just got a bit carried away!)

Madonna Promo Tour and "Miles Away" Sneak Peak

Madonna

As of today, Madonna mania is full speed ahead as "4 Minutes" will be hitting radio worldwide and it will ready to download from tomorrow in the UK I hear.  Some of my online buddies put out news today that Madonna is possibly doing a promo tour as well and here is what they had to say about that...

Madonna is going to be doing the promo tour at the beggining of April, after the first single - "4 Minutes" - comes out. The promo tour is to take place in Los Angeles, New York and London. She is in the studio rehearsing her vocals, just setting all the vocal arangements. Madonna said she was wanting to do like five songs.

As for her world tour, Madonna said she wanted to do the tour at the beggining of November 2008. She wanted to do it at a different time of year. And she wants it to kick off in Australia. Madonna is already casting for the tour (as confirmed by Perez Hilton), but she says she is going to use most of her dancers from the Confessions Tour because they have that hip hop dance style already.

You may also be interested in hearing this sneak peak via Drowned Madonna of new track from "Hard Candy" called "Miles Away" that was aired on Asian TV earlier.

It's all kicking off again EQs!

Private Live Performance and Your Invitation to The Private Party!

Private

Are you hooked on Private yet?  I thought so.  Although the band have rarely stepped out in front of the live audiences yet, here is their performance of "My Secret Lover" at the Zulu Awards.

One commenter named swelstead said it best.  Pyramid: Gary Numan.  Green laser: Frankie Goes to Hollywood.  Side-to-side dance moves: Robert Palmer.  Private: Priceless!

And since Popjustice is already talking about it, here's a link to the band's techno remix album project called "Private Party".

I've have been jamming out to "Man I'm A Man Machine" for awhile and it's like, totally addictive.  More info on the record release date as soon as I know!

OK OK - I Concede...

Hey everyone - it's Raj here. After going back and forth, forwards and backwards and around the block and the bend, I've decided to keep it Electroqueer folks! Thanks to everyone who emailed, myspaced and facebooked me about it. It was your opinions that really made the decision for me a lot easier. You'll still see the EQ logo from time to time, but Electroqueer will be afront so there is no doubt in anyone's mind what EQ really stands for. So thanks everyone for your input - I appreciate the time you took out of your days to let me know what you thought.

So with that said - onto the rants!

  • Another reason why I love Tiffany. My favorite red-headed singer of all time has made a special limited edition package available to all her hardcore fans and I received mine yesterday. What was in it? Signed CDs of "Dust Off And Dance", "Just Me" and an exclusive demo CD of ultra rare Tiffany demos called "Mimi's Kitchen". Oh and it didn't stop there...5 (yes 5) signed 8x10 glossy photos, a signed Playboy T-shirt (with Tiff on the cover) and even a free download of "Higher". I almost creamed myself when I opened the package.
  • And speaking of Playboy, Dimitri From Paris (ala Deee-Lite) is putting out a great new compilation CD called "Return To The Playboy Mansion" on April 7th which we've been grooving to for a few days now. It has a "Party" disc and a "Sexy" disc and features some sexy great tunage from Jamiroquai, Marvin Gaye and the man himself, Barry White. Can't you just feel the satin sheets?
  • Retroqueers, Have you seen the trailer for "The Lost Boys : The Tribe" yet? OMG click here. Corey Feldman is back in the sequel and we even hear Corey Haim is in it too! "The Lost Boys" was such a huge movie in my youth and officially made me very afraid of vampires. I remember it was so controversial that they wouldn't allow it to be played at my junior high school for a youth fun night.
  • So I'm not crazy about Madonna's new album cover for "Hard Candy". But "4 Minutes" still continues to work me over. Apparently it's out on Monday for download so expect to be immersed into Madonna media mania all over again. Get ready EQs!
  • So Luciana has released a compilation album called "Featuring Luciana". What a bloody good idea! Available on iTunes now, "Featuring Luciana" is kinda of fucking great - a very good electro listen featuring the very distinctive vocals of Luciana herself - I like it.
  • I've just finished my interview with The Gadsdens. It's a cool interview and I learned a lot more about them and why they are on the up and up. Expect to read the interview early next week!
  • Who the hell is Jeremy Gloff? Well he's a total 80's electro lovechild from the deep south USA and has a fun little electro diddy available for download on his MySpazz page. Anyone who lists Janet Jackson, Tiffany and The Thompson Twins as their influences definitely gets a nod from moi.
  • And finally I leave you with this HOT video called "Le Night Dominator" I found over on Palms Out Sounds by the band The Touch. My ass is shakin - is yours?

MySpace Discovery + Free Download : Dísa

Disa

Move over Bjork, you're not the hottest thing to come out of Iceland anymore.  Say hello to Dísa EQs.

A good friend of mine turned me onto Dísa a few weeks ago and I have to say - she is absolutely brilliant.  Run very quickly over to her MySpace page now to discover the gorgeous track that is "Temptation" - which is not only climbing The EQ Chart as we speak, but it's also being offered up as free download!

I am also totally in love with Dísa's track "Missing Part".  I can't stop listening to it - it's on repeat.  I am going to keep a very keen eye on Dísa's development as I think the kind of music she's doing is very important and relevant to music today.  She's totally EQ approved and I'd be very curious as to what you think about her.

If you love a soothing female voice over a comfortable duvet of chilled electronica - Dísa is an Icelandic import you need to have on your iPods.

Press Play Bitch : Sergey Lazarev "Flyer (Under Fire)"

Sergey_flyer

I got a little overly obsessed with Sergey's Eurovision track "Flyer (Under Fire)" last night and found that it was all over the web and has the Russians and a certain EQ going crack crazy.

So here it is in HQ format for you to listen to - just press play bitch!

Sergey Lazarev - "Flyer (Under Fire)"

Sergey really needs to get his ass over to the UK to do some promo - Pronto. His english-speaking fan club beckons. It's time for a talented international popster to bring some quality synchronized dancing and performance back to the masses.

What Is Darius Danesh Doing?

Darius

Pop Quiz EQs!  What is Darius Danesh doing in this photograph?

A - He's starring in Brokeback Mountain 2 : The Cuddly Lovable Grizzly Bears

OR

B - He's starring as Rhett Butler in the West End musical of classic love story "Gone With The Wind".

Darius, despite your current look you're rocking (I'm sure it's for the role your playing), you still will always be THE ONE Popstar who wins the "Had-me-so-transfixed-that-I-followed-you-for-3 blocks-around-Earls Court-at-3am-after-a-night-of-clubbing Award" shortly following the making of your "Rushes" video.

Geesh, Darren Hayes didn't even win that EQ accolade - you should feel honored!

Please put out a new album too - I'm waiting!

Sergey Lazarev Video For "Girlfriend" and Eurovision Performance of "Flyer"

Sergeytwin

In my weekly scrounge of the internet for all things fun and Sergey, I found out via one of my favorite blogsters Pop Poster Girl that my numero uno Russian popster did a performance of a new song called "Flyer" for the Russian Eurovision competition.  Unfortunately, Sergey lost to Dima Bilan and only came in 4th which I think is a travesty.  Hahaha - like I'm one to judge Russian pop acts, but since I think Sergey is a hell of a lot more sexier than Dima (see below), I'm going to get all pissy about it and you can't stop me.  Anywho - check out Sergey's stellar performance and all black wearing sexiness on the YouTubage below.

What did you think about that!  And if that wasn't enough, we are treated to a new video by Sergey for his uber-bitchy track "Girlfriend" which once again sees Sergey slinking around with a bunch of beautiful women with his shirt half-open.  New Sergey = Happy EQs.

How does Sergey Lazarev know how to push all my pop buttons?  Naughty Sergey.

And here is the nakedness of Dima Bilan just for the hell of it...do the homework!  Dima is quite obviously a believer in "less is more".

Oh it's a fun day here in the EQ office!

Imogen Heap Went To Sunday School For Michael Jackson!

Mj_imogen

Imogen Heap recently took part in a "Thrillercast" on Michael Jackson's website in which she talks about her relation to Michael Jackson growing up.  Take a listen here to experience Imogen talking about how Michael Jackson influenced her as an artist and how she even wanted to attend Sunday school to be more like the gloved-one himself!  It's an interesting story!

I have to say, re-releasing "Thriller" was probably the best PR move Michael Jackson has done in years.  Everyone is reminiscing about Michael Jackson's good old days and in light of all the negative PR Wacko Jacko gets, it's really nice to see people remembering how this album shaped them growing up.  It's been 25 years since the release of "Thriller" but it still sounds as fresh and innovative now as it did back then.  And Imogen Heap does some crazy MJ sound-effects that you must check out on the linkage above!

Shamone!  (sp-but is it a word?)

Michael Jackson and Imogen Heap - we salute you.

PS - And on the subject of Jackson - might I also say that I fucking love Janet Jackson's new video and song to "Rock With U" which I just saw yesterday over at ModFab.  It's a return to form for Miss-Jackson-If-Ya-Nasty and I'm thrilled to death.  It's like 1987 all over again - Janet and Paula back in the mix.  Give it a whirl EQs!

Listen to Funkerman "Speed Up"

People are saying that Funkerman vocalist I-Fan sounds a bit like Justin Trousersnake. I would have to agree. Besides that, "Speed Up" is a smokin track that the great guys over at Tommorrow Never Knows want you all to know about it. We have a feeling that this track could explode.

What do you think?

Private Has Some Breaking Up To Do

EQ Royales Private wanted to share their hot new video for "We Got Some Breaking Up To Do" with all of you EQs.  The visual has everything in a pop video that I love including...

  • Synchronised dance moves!
  • Bright neon lights!
  • A confident woman behind the keyboard!
  • Some fancy cars!
  • A pinch of Prince for us retroheads!
  • Martinis!
  • Multi-tasking: not only does lead singer Thomas star in the video, he also directed it!

Private continue to have me spellbound with their third single - I so can't wait to see them live.

"We Got Some Breaking Up To Do" has totally made my rainy London day!

Thanks Private.

Eeek! The Best Clip You'll Hear All Day - It's Imogen Heap's "Not Now But Soon"

Imogenheap

Oooh - I am uber excited.  Head on over to Imogen Heap's MySpace page to hear a clip of her lovely new track "Not Now But Soon" which I've been talking about for quite awhile.  It's gorgeous and will be released very soon on March 18th!

Sigh - New Imogen Heap = Happy EQs!

Imogen also released some old footage of her bad self performing "Daylight Robbery" awhile back on tour. Check it out...I think you'll find she rocks a keytar just as bad-ass as Justin Shave does...

Video: September's UK Video for "Cry For You"

She's blonde, she's from Sweden and her name is September.  The dance diva just put out her UK Kylie meets Star Wars-esque video to electronic dance track "Cry For You" which has all the boys and girls going crazy on the dancefloor.  I heard it this weekend as a matter-of-fact!

September has been another artist that I get quite a few emails about which I have glanced over, but this video makes me pay attention and now I just want to jump up and jiggle.  I'm sure you'll feel the same.  And better yet, her use of colour in this video is fantastic - it so EQ!  How's that for a Monday?

Enjoy EQs!

MySpace Discovery : Cassette Electrik

Cassette_electrik

Say hello to Cassette Electrik.  I keep getting emails about them from all-sorts and I have to say that I am really fond of their remake of the Erasure classic "A Little Respect" which has been on the EQ Chart for quite awhile now.  Very soon, the "electro with soul" twosome will also be releasing their new single "The Smartest Bomb" which is rather electrolicious - my ears always tweak up a little bit whenever it randomly takes over my iPod.

Their debut album "Electromagnetic" is now available on iTunes and you can get your fill for all things Cassette Electrik over on their MySpace page now!  We'll be watching them closely as they have already opened for the legendary Human League and are doing some shows out and about in Londontown.  If you fancy checking them out tomorrow, they will be doing a gig at Blow Up on Oxford Street!

Blake Lewis Lovin

Blakelewis

Although I am not a fan of Blake Lewis' first single "Break Anotha", I completely went ga ga over his performance of "How Many Words" on American Idol which was just shown on UK TV. Wow - just wow.

My view on Blake Lewis is somewhat limited. I didn't watch American Idol last year and normally I am not into these reality talent shows like I was when they first came out seven years ago, but it's kinda hard to not get sucked into American Idol this year. Anyways, before I get going on a rant about these shows and how Jason Castro is the best thing I've seen in years, let me just shut up and post Blake's performance of "How Many Words" for all the non-American readers who haven't seen this yet.

And - I highly recommend giving Blake's album "Audio Daydream" a whirly woo - EQ is bigging upping "End Of The World" now in the EQ Chart which is pure electronic pop pleasure. And tracks "1000 Miles" and "I Got U", well I could just listen to those tracks all day.

Welcome To The EQ Royale : Darin

Darin

Are you surprised?  Didn't think so.

Darin has been working me into a state of complete crazy tizzyness lately and after about two minutes of thought and a very interesting conversation with another EQ Royaler, he's been added to our exclusive list of artists quicker than contestants can get voted off American Idol.

Not only has his track "Desire" been one of THE best and most powerful in-yer-face electropop stompers I've ever heard in a long time, Darin continues to amaze me with the utterly incredible anthem track "Insanity" which is climbing the EQ Chart as we speak.

He's got style.  He's got sass and he rocks those red suspenders and hair gel like no other.

Welcome to the EQ Royale Darin.  Make yourself comfortable...

"4 Minutes" Video Images - Madonna Looking Great!

Madonna looks great in these leaked photos from her new video to "4 Minutes" which have been circulating on Madonna boards today!  I think she looks stunning.  High gloss = High Fun.  Still can't wait for the HQ version of the song though!

Nathan Walters - New Single on iTunes

Nathan_walters

Nathan Walters fantastic new song "Fall" is available on iTunes USA and UK!

This is the best news I've heard all day as I've been patiently awaiting something audiolicious from Mr. Walters for quite some time (hint Brad - we need a promo!).  Nathan Walters is one of the brightest talents I've heard in quite awhile and you must run over to his MySpace now to check out his tremendous talent.  "Makes Me Love You" and "Romance You" are just stunning pop pleasers.

Hurry up and release that album Nathan, your fan club impatiently beckons!

If you are interested in learning a little bit more about Nathan too, you can re-visit the EQ Interview with him from awhile back.

Should We Just Be Known As EQ?

So tell me - Would you hate me too much if I rebranded to just be EQ? It's something I've been thinking about for awhile and the blog will still be named "Electroqueer" but since everyone calls me EQ anyways, I think it might be a good opportunity to rebrand myself to just "EQ". What do you think? Send me an email or a comment to let me know your thoughts. Here is a little sneaky-peak at the direction of branding I may go in...nothing final - I'm still stewing over it, call it "Identity Crisis" if you will (get it dorks?) but I'd be uber curious to hear what you had to say about it.

Rebrandeqlogo

However, one thing that will never change about EQ is the rants! So here's the musical bits of pop nonsense that have been floating around me noggin this week.

  • Duffy has been working me. God, why can't Amy Winehouse be more like her. Her album "Rockferry" has had me in a "I-kind-of-like-this-Dusty-Springfield-vibe" all week. It's like a little bit of sunshine on a rainy day.

  • Madonna's new song "4 Minutes" i'm kinda so-so with now. It's not like I can really have a huge opinion of it based on that French Radio leaky thing, but I remember feeling the same way about "Hung Up" when I first heard it and because it grows on you like a fungus, which I ended up loving of course. I actually was more excited about "4 Minutes" when I heard the Timbaland live bootleg of it a few weeks ago, but the French dude screaming over a low-quality radio rip just kinda ruined it for me...more on that later...

  • Totally loving the new iTunes widgets. Did ya see em on the page? I personally think they rock and I'm quite picky when it comes to widgets. If you didn't notice, I also added a Retro video section too. If I was a blogger in 80s, that is the shit I would have been shouting from the mountaintops. I'm your Venus.

  • Oh my god. The dude also known as Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly lives in my building! I totally saw him getting a taxi from my building yesterday and he was talking to a few residents like he's known them for ages. I thought that was totally cool considering I've just bought his album and have been enjoying it.

  • What's with these American Idol contestants and their saucy stripping antics? Don't you know that to be a successful American heartthrob you need to be squeaky clean? Fucking rubbish. Oh gawd, everyone should just fucking get naked, then maybe it won't be such a big deal.

  • Private are (quite possibly) releasing a remix album! It's all a little hush hush now, but I've heard it and it's really fun! More official news on that coming up soon!

  • I'm totally fizzing at my robotic gash (not my words, but someone else's words at describing EQ's excitement) about electro lifestyle blog "Electro Plankton". Check out the linkage - it's rather fucking cool. I plan to buy everything they feature on their blog.

  • Nelson Clemente is on iTunes! Go and download "6th Perception" now bitches! Nelson is saving up for a plane ticket to Boston to shoot his video and the only way he is gonna get there is by selling EPs! So go out and do it now! Our 6th perception also did notice that Nelson is sporting some new sexy skin pix on his Myspace and Facebook pages. Naughty Nelson - but nice biceps dude!

  • Everytime I see that photo of Swany from Switch22 below, I crack up. Swany you so rock my world. Asian-power. I want to be known as "The Pad Thai Bitch". Don't fuck with me rice noodles. You, me and Chinatown - is it a date?

  • And finally I leave you with the new disco vid-e-o from Bob Sinclar featuring Steve Edwards called "Together" which is released digitally 17th March, and in the shops March 24th. I love the happy-feel-good vibe to this song and the first opening scenes feature London and Thailand - my two favourite places. You know, they're isn't anything wrong with smiling these days you sad sods. C'mon forget your troubles and get happy - let's do it "together!" Grab a coke and a smile bitches. The holidays are coming...ok, I'm smoking crackberries again...I think I'll move to Rockferry.

Swany from Switch22 Clearly In Touch With His Chinese Roots

N687075231_2468906_1283

While SDB of EQ Royale band Switch22 has been galavanting around London being crowned "best groomed male", the other half of Switch22 has been galavanting around Asia and has given himself a, slightly different title...

Swany - I'm ordering sweet pork bitch next time I do Chinatown!

Love ya bro! EQ

"Casey" by Darren Hayes Available to Download Now.

Darrenhayescasey_2

Darren Hayes epic single "Casey" isn't getting much radio airplay in the UK but that is hardly a reason not to buy it right this second via digital download from http://www.darrenhayes.dloadshop.com/. A firm fan favorite and the pinnacle of his live shows for the past year, "Casey" is in my opinion, Darren Hayes' career best recording...debunking my personal favorite "Like It Or Not" from "Spin".

It's one of the only songs that can easily move me to tears (he says in his best macho voice), joining the emotional ranks of such heart-wrenching classics like Sarah McLachlan's "I Will Remember You" , Madonna's "Nothing Fails" and Tracy Chapman's "Baby Can I Hold You" .  A stellar example of perfectly executed singer/songwriter skills, "Casey" deserves to be heard by everyone on this planet as it's a song that everyone can relate to in some way. Unless we show our support right now, the world may never have the pleasure of knowing this song as intimately as you EQ readers do.

Available in a plethora of digital formats on the link above, make sure you buy your copy and report back here to say that you've shown your support.  "Casey" may not be a chart hit, but the more we do to help promote it ourselves, the more the world will understand and come to know one of the music world's greatest talents, the man that is Darren Hayes.

Have you bought "Casey" yet?

PS - the original demo version is gorgeous...it's so uber cool to see how the original pop demo can turn into a lush pool of gorgeous electronica. And the HQ video is available on iTunes too - I'm loving it even more in full screen glory.

JC Chasez - Yeah, Old Song, But Still Quite Good.

Jcchasez

You know, for some strange reason, I've never seen this 2006 video by JC Chasez called "All Day Long I Dream About Sex". Sure, I own his "Schizophrenic" album because there are some really good electro stompers on it, like the above mentioned, but I have never seen the video until this evening. How odd. Well it was 2006 wasn't it. I guess I wasn't the avid YouTube user back then as I am today.

So here you go, if you haven't seen or heard it, take a peeky poo here. JC may not be able to score a solo hit these days without N'Sync, but he did an absolute bang-up job on this track if you ask me...this track was a little too far ahead of it's time - he should re-release it.

Rick Astley Would Never...

Rickastleywldnever

This is too cute, just had to share.

Welcome To The EQ Royale : Petros

Petros

We've been going through our favourite music lately and deciding which artists to add to the EQ Royale this month as we'll be adding 10 brilliant artists to our ever-so-exclusive roster and there is one artist that I have not written enough about and his name is Petros.

You may have seen his video to "Body Glow" in EQTV over the past year when we broke it and it is with a hearty hug that we welcome Petros to the EQ Royale. Why you ask?

  • His song "Utopia" is an electronic gem that I can't stop listening to. It's one of those open road electronica fantasias that leave you saying "Wow that's a great song".
  • Beauty and brains all rolled into one...Petros is currently attending Harvard University. How do you like them apples!
  • Petros can only go from strength-to-strength, his debut album "V.I.P." is already available on iTunes and it's a bloody good listen and a very good electro-pop debut for someone so young. Justin Timberlake could have quite easily recorded this album.
  • Title track "V.I.P." has so much attitude that you'll be singing it every time you're getting ready to go out for a big one.
  • Petros is a Boston boy with a little Greek heritage and what's not to love about that really?

Discover Petros for yourself here, but to get the full phat electro-pop experience, download "V.I.P." the album and "Body Glow" single by Petros now from iTunes.

Marsheaux Still Continues To Excite EQ

Marsheaux

The lovely electro ladies of Marsheaux still continue to excite me to no end. Right now I am grooving to the heavenly eurphoric beats of "Dream Of A Disco" a track from their quite listenable "Peek A Boo" album. I don't know exactly what it is about Marsheaux that I am so drawn to, but I really really into them. I've always been a sucker for striking women working a computer beat so I guess maybe that has something to do with it. Somehow I don't think I'm alone in that boat.

Anywho - if you haven't discovered Marsheaux yet for yourselves, you really need to download their stuff from iTunes pronto. And if their amazing sense for the the colour purple isn't enough ammunition for you to take listen to them, then I don't know what else is really. So sayeth EQ.

Marsheaux MySpace - Go. Now.
