Antigone is brilliant. This is the gods honest truth...

N612117673_485435_1461

I am brimming with excitement about Antigone's finished album...Ive been listening to it all morning and it's rather fucking amazing.  EQ's favourite woman wonder (dressed as the lady bug queen of Bestival above) of the moment has created something completely utterly incredible and fabtasmagorically electronic.  More on the album in the coming months as EQ begins to prepare you for the wonderment and whimsical trip into Antigoneland.  I'm spinning around - move out of my way!

The Time Machine Tour - Live from Brighton Part 1

Time Machine Tour Review Part 1 / Time Machine Tour Review Part 2

WARNING: This blog post contains spoilers so if you want to read on, then hey, read on EQs...but if you want to be surprised just like we were, then it's really worth the wait to experience this spectacular show for yourselves, that is if you have the willpower!

So on Friday night, the picturesque seaside city of Brighton hosted the Darren Hayes Time Machine Tour in which the Brighton Dome was turned into a kaleidescope of electronic music, captivating stage design and a spectacular pyro light and laser show to amaze even the most skeptical of music fans who were brought along by their significant others or who were just curious as to what the hell all the fuss is about this man we love who is singing about time travel, applied science and all the other curiously strange things that float up to the surface from 'This Delicate Thing We've Made'.

Dh07_01

From the moment we walked into the Dome, we noticed that this was not just another Darren Hayes show, this was a production.  Even the ushers were wearing the crisp red shirts and black ties just like Darren's uniform and the fluidly robotic dancers in the 'Me Myself and I' video.  The tour book is fashioned into a biblical looking book from the 1800s called 'How To Build A Time Machine'.  Not a coincidence.  The excitement from fans was unparalleled.  Their smiles alone could tell the stories of how important this tour was going to be.  It's not a greatest hits tour, it's not a 'let's do it one more time for the fans' effort.  This is the defining moment of man who has taken the lead in redefining electronic music.  A man who is bringing art back into music and cares enough about the dedicated fans to make sure they have the best seats in the house and a bagful of goodies that are to die for.

After a touching acoustic set by James Murray (whom we will be writing more about on EQ), Darren opened the show with the powerful 'The Future Holds A Lion's Heart' as a shadowy figure emerging from a bridge.  At this point we noted that the staging wasn't very elaborate, but more a minimalist plain backdrop that will be creatively used as an artist's canvas in which clever imagery and video will be used to tell the story we were about to witness.  Think Madonna's 'Drowned World Tour'.  Think Pet Shop Boys 'Nightlife Tour' if you were lucky enough to see those epic stage productions.  If you are sat in the first five rows, be warned, the pyros alone could make you see stars for a minute or so after they explode.

Dh07_02

Darren looks amazing as does the entire band and backing vocalists Iain James and Anna Maria La Spina.  Futuristic yet comfortable black outfits with symmetrical neon strips that make you think - hmmm, which fashionista did Darren befriend to come up with this great costumery?  'Who Would Have Thought' and 'Waking The Monster' are delivered with precision as we see Darren singing from a stool in a gigantic library - perhaps learning all about the time machine he has found and dusting it off to take us on trip in 'How To Build A Time Machine' - one of the best numbers of the night and still one of our favourite songs on 'Delicate'.

In 'Neverland' we have traveled back in time into Darren's childhood where he is happily playing with his mates in a cleverly choreographed piece.  But just like the song, this number speaks to how eerie a child's mind can work in secret.  Is he fantasizing about killing his father and living in a world where the monstrosity of abuse doesn't exist?  After seeing this number performed live and listening to it about 500 more times, we feel rather daft about our comments on the song previously.  We do hope you'll forgive us...this song really does give us the chills now.

Dh07_04

'Insatiable' is done in the intimate acoustic arrangement fans have been treated to this last summer during Club Delicacy and as one of Darren's most notable hits, everyone in the Dome is humming along joyously.  'On The Verge Of Something Wonderful' is met with crazy screams and the Dome is bouncing around just like the song.  The biggest surprise of the night was Darren's re-invention of 'The Best Thing' from his Savage Garden days which is full of juicy electronic bits that make the song feel shiny, fresh and new.  Darren is proud of his little re-invention of one of his classics of yesteryear and it made us wish that Darren will put out an album or EP of Savage Garden hits re-worked by Justin Shave...shall it include 'Carry On Amedeus' and 'Void/All Is Full Of Love'?  We thinks we should pester Darren to do this...for isn't a good idea?  Sorry we digress, after this short fantasy, we are reminded to keep watching the show as surprisingly 'Listen All You People' is performed.  This song works really well live in it's anthematic delivery and we had a little chuckle when Darren pointed to himself during the 'all the freaks, all the queers' lyric.  How cute.

In the second arc of the show things start to go a bit dark in 'The Only One' and 'Void' and perhaps we are in the time machine re-visiting Darren's darker period from 'The Tension And The Spark'.  'Darkness' was stunning and it even is re-invented with the beat from Prince's 'When Doves Cry' which will make any 80's electronica junkie shiver and quiver with excitement before launching into a perfectly planted 'Step Into The Light'.  The fact that Darren put those two songs back-to-back in the setlist totally fulfilled an EQ fantasy...wowX100!

Dh07_05

During 'I Like The Way' Darren gets closer and intimate with the audience as the very cool man-movable steel bridge gets stretched out into the Dome and Darren takes a seat high amongst the crowd and looks down at a fan and says, "Well you have a mighty fine seat don't ya!"

We are going to pause our boom box right here and deliver part 2 very soon...stay bookmarked and enjoy the little piccys taken by legend Willie Williams who designed the production and for whom his work with Darren and U2 is beyond amazing...just wait until you read about part 2 and see our snaps in the next installment and if you haven't bought tickets for next Wednesday's show at the Royal Albert Hall, you need to stop what you are doing and buy them now.

A Rant A Day Keeps The Doctor Away...

Hello EQs.  So tonight is the night.  I am off to Brighton with Geri-licious to see the Darren Hayes Time Machine Tour.  I am SO looking forward to it.  I had a little sneaky peaky at some of the photos that Darren posted on his Myspazz page and it looks like a light and laser spectacular combined with the thrilling electronic sounds of my favourite male artist of all time.  Many EQs have already got to see the show in Glasgow, Newcastle and Birmingham and have been sending me lovely emails about it saying how much fun I am going to have - so I am utterly hyped-up and ready to go.  Can't wait to see the lovely Myspacers/Darren fans that I have had the pleasure to hang out with this year too like Mandy, Manu, Emma, Megan, Rich & Adam, Clare and Claudia!  Can't wait to see you guys tonite and next week at Royal Albert Hall!  So with that, on with the rants!

  1. I'm such a fucking gay.  I love Britney's 'Gimme More'.  I tried not to like it cuz, well, it's Britney.  But you know what - I thought her VMA performance was hilarious and I totally got it.  And the song is pretty cool.  I don't own any Britney records or mp3s, but I did illegally download this song.  It's a one-off peeps.  Don't expect EQ to turn into another new music blog that only talks about Britney, Justin, Nelly Furtado, Beyonce, Shakira and various members of the Black Eyed Peas.
  2. Speaking of new music blogs...  I keep getting emails everyday for link requests saying how much our blogs are similar and how much they love EQ.  Then I look at their blogs and they are nothing more than gossip about above said artists.  Funny thing that - these people want to link up with me, yet they've never left a comment nor have I heard of them before...sorry peeps, interactivity is key, a little more effort with the interactivity and you might get to share in the traffic, ok?  You might as well be someone on the street asking me for money.
  3. Naked Highway have made a new song called 'Shorty' that is to die for!  I can't stop listening to it.  LISTEN TO NAKED HIGHWAY PEOPLE.  Sy from Naked Highway is one of the nicest guys I've ever met in this so called pop world and the music he makes is such electronic fun.  To get acquainted with Naked Highway again, visit them on Myspazz and tell em EQ sent ya.  POP IT DROP IT!!!
  4. EEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKK!  Stop the press.  Dangerous Muse have posted a 16 second clip of their new song 'Everyday is Halloween' over on their Myspazz page as well.  I am salivating.  I hunger for the finished track.  Gimme more.  It's EQ bitch!
  5. Still haven't listened to my Jamelia's Greatest Hits CD...
  6. We were so pissed off that we missed Sia's show at Bush Hall a few weeks ago.  However we just go tickets for her upcoming show in December so the world isn't going to end.  Thanks Keeley for hooking it up!
  7. Still don't like the Sugababes 'About You Now' no matter how 'spanking' it touts itself as.  It's just so McFly that can't listen to it.  I actually downloaded the single and all the remixes to see if I'd change my mind and you know what - it didn't...it just doesn't even sound like the Sugababes at all.  However if you are watching Channel Five this weekend, that showcase that Ross and I went to will be on telly - look out for us in the audience!
  8. Loyal EQ reader Daniel Danny Dan has kindly recommended pop/experimental stylings of Walter Meego and Swedish club diva September to all of you!  Check the linkage - they are both pretty good and I'm sure I've heard of September sometime somewhere before...think and burn!
  9. I've been listening to a lot of Skye lately again.  I really likes her and her album 'Mind How You Go' was such a great listen.  Get reacquainted with her again over at Myspazz and make sure you check out her cover of the Gorillaz 'Feel Good Inc' that is just as amazing as the original.  I've officially added her to my cool little list of 'Uberwomen' which consists of Antigone, Tracey Thorn, Imogen Heap, Siobhan Donagahy, Sylvia Powell and Rosin Murphy (who fucking has me in a big trance lately).
  10. All this talk of Sergey Lazarev on EQ lately has totally got me back into t.A.T.U. again.  Check out some of their tracks on their Myspazz page like 'Loves Me Not' and 'Dangerous and Moving' which may have passed you by when it was released awhile ago.  Forget the lesbian romps on the playground, these girls are some fierce bitches.  Oh why not, let's take a look at their cover of The Smiths classic 'How Soon Is Now'...

If EQ Was In Charge Of Sergey Lazarev's UK Marketing...

Sergey_cd_cover

If I were in charge of marketing for Sergey Lazarev's debut CD in the UK and the USA, well, this is what the album artwork would look like...classy huh?!  Sexy - definitley.  Copies would fly off the shelf just based on the album artwork alone eh?  hehehe.

And this is what the tracklisting would be...

  1. Music Under My Skin
  2. Fake
  3. Everytime
  4. Can't Let You Go
  5. Shiver
  6. Lost Without Your Love
  7. Beautiful
  8. Eye Of The Storm
  9. That's Where I Belong
  10. Shattered Dreams
  11. Girlfriend
  12. He Said, She Said
  13. TV or Radio

It's nice to dream isn't it?...

More Info On Robyn's 'Handle Me'

Robynhandleme

Take a look at the cute single artwork for Robyn's fun new song 'Handle Me' which comes out 22 October on download and on physical release the following week.  I will say it again, this is one of my favourite songs off of Robyn's album which you should all go out and buy.  If you haven't bought it yet, well then you aren't very EQ are you?

Below is info copied from the press release which describes Robyn's takeover of the UK music charts pretty accurately if you ask me!  Let's just keep our fingers crossed that she spends some money from the Konichiwa Records fund and re-does the video!  Robyn, we have some ideas if are interested...hehehe.

"Robyn follows her number one single ‘With Every Heartbeat’ with ‘Handle Me’. ‘Handle Me’ is as feisty as pop songs come; full of hip hop flavored attitude and with a chorus that should be heard across schoolyards for months to come. ‘Handle Me’ is taken from her silver selling, eponymous album ‘Robyn’.

Since the demise of the Spice Girls, ‘girl power’ is perhaps a term that should be used sparingly, but Robyn is it personified. An ass-kicking blond woman, who blasted through the industry bullshit and made startling, profound, honest pop music all of her own. And new single ‘Handle Me’ is just this and more.

Handle Me will be released on CD, 7” and 12” and will be backed by new Robyn tracks and remixes from the likes of Björn Yttling (from Peter, Bjorn and John), Williams, Ortzrocka and Soul Seekers."

Darren Hayes 'Me Myself and I' Video Premiere

Mmi2_2

Darren Hayes has just now unleashed his new video to 'Me Myself and I' which you can view in stunning high-quality over at his website here, or in YouTube quality here.

The single will be released 5 November and will be chock full of goodness from what we hear!

This is the slickest video production Darren Hayes has ever done in my opinion - it's also one of the coolest electro songs he's ever put out and I am so happy he chose this one as a single!

Reports have also been flying in all over about Darren's fantastic show in Glasgow last night!  I'll be off to the Brighton show on Friday in which I will give you my two cents worth this weekend hopefully!  I kinda already know I won't be disappointed!  It's tempting to read all about it now, but I am restraining myself...

Great job Darren!

It's Raining, It's Pouring...

Well it's another fine Monday morning in London - rain, rain, rain.  You, know, despite it being London and all, we don't mind the rain.  It's actually just the delayed train times that go with it.  So this week at my day job is going to be a killer one - let me just apologize in advance if a day goes by and I can't seem to get around to post.  It's just one of those weeks.  In fact, it's so busy that I had to even turn down going to opening night of Darren Hayes' Time Machine Tour tonite in Glasgow.  I'm so annoyed, but now I'll be going to the Brighton show and of course Royal Albert Hall in London so that isn't so bad.  I will however refrain from reading ANY chitter chatter on the Darren Hayes message boards about the setlist or the surprises that are in store!  This is my attempt to not read any spoilers and I never mind spoilers, but I really want to be surprised by the show...so with that said, on with the rants...

  1. I keep literally bumping into Stephan D'Bart of Switch22 all the time lately in Soho.  I am convinced he is stalking me and of course I'm sure he thinks I am stalking him.  LOL.  Stephan tells me that he's got a lot of stuff cooked up in the way of new Switch22 mixes and I can't of course, wait to hear them!
  2. Nelson Clemente is working on a new song called '90 Days' which is outstanding.  It's so cool.  We were lucky enough to hear a preview of it and let me tell you - it's turning out to be a really great track.  Although it sounds nothing like Robyn's 'With Every Heartbeat' it has that certain pecuilarness about it that makes you go 'wow - that's fresh'.
  3. I want my Dragonette CD.  I am sure it will sound even better when I listen to the physical copy versus my digital copy.
  4. So I got sent the new Jamelia greatest hits CD that hits stores this week.  I was never into Jamelia that much, but to be honest, in looking at the tracklist, it might be a good listen...she's had a few good pop songs hasn't she?
  5. Hey The Ultrasonics are Popjustice's Song Of The Day with 'Why You Had To Leave'!  Congratulations Joanna and the band!  I can't wait to see The Ultrasonics at Popshow's Halloween party next month!
  6. And speaking of Halloween, I am foaming at the mouth to hear Dangerous Muse's version of 'Everyday is Halloween'.  Bring it on!
  7. The new Seal/Stuart Price stuff...it's kinda exciting isn't it!  More on this later...
  8. Still not excited by Kylie X, but I reserve the right to change my mind.
  9. Shayne Ward - not sexy.  I don't get it.
  10. And finally, let's retro rewind back to 89 and re-visit this little video by Shakespeare's Sister called ' You're History' that I saw on telly yesterday and it totally reminded me of how cool I thought this band was!  A woman wearing all black is still a lot more sexy to me than a shirtless Shayne Ward any day.

Oh what the hell...I was singing this retro track in my head from Stereo MCs on the tube this morning...another fucking great retro track...

Dangerous Muse Conjuring Up A Halloween Treat...

Dm

Mikey and Tom aka Dangerous Muse are conjuring up a special October Halloween treat for us all.  It seems the boys have done a cover version of The Ministry classic 'Everyday Is Halloween' and will be debuting it soon online as we are patiently waiting for them to put the finishing touches on their album which they have promised us will be happening!

We so wish we could hear this right here and now, but we'll have to wait...stay tuned for more on 'Everyday Is Halloween' once it drops online!

The New MissMatch Video - 'Breathe In/Breathe Out'

Might we present, the new video from MissMatch - 'Breathe In/Breathe Out'.

We love the bassline.

We love the pinkness.

We love the curls.

We love the song.

Dragonette Finally Releases 'Galore' on Physical CD!

Dragonette

Those lovely Dragonette-sters sent a message out this morning to the interweb saying that their physical CD for 'Galore' is finally being released.

" For those of us who still enjoy holding a record in our hands, reading through lyrics, scanning the thank yous, and looking at printed pictures, (i.e. those of us who remember the joy of "the whole package")... well, it's about to get physical.

The real 3D day-glo CD version of "Galore" wil be materializing in UK and Canadian stores this coming Monday and Tuesday, respectively.

Whether you still have a cd walkman or cd collection, or you just want to assuage your guilt for having a lo-grade copy from the offramps of the Information Superhighway, go out and get your CD copy next week.

Come.... Reach Out and Touch Us.

See you soon at a show near you.

Love, Dragonette. "

Yay.  We love the scent of new fresh CD plastic.

Hear Darren Hayes singing Madonna and Annie Lennox...

It's a huge Darren Hayes news day on the blogs!  Arjan Writes has a new remix of 'Me Myself and (I)' and Chart Rigger posted the news that hit this morning regarding Darren's incident.  And, thanks to Maggz, you can see Darren performing Madonna's 'Ray Of Light' and Annie Lennox's 'Why' on the show 'Soundtrack To My Life' on the YouTubage above!

Check the 'related' links at the end of the video to see the other three parts where Darren is performing a lovely accoustic version of Prince's 'Theives In The Temple' along with a Savage Garden classic and 'On The Verge Of Something Wonderful'.

New Dave Gahan Video for 'Kingdom'

Here is the new video for Dave Gahan's 'Kingdom'.

Illuminated dental work - fab.

Neighborhood orchestral synchronized lighting - wicked.

Halloween-ish emptiness on the streets - spooky.

Dave Gahan - fucking flawless.

Electroqueer Retro Rewind: The Jets

Thejets

Easily one of my favourite pop bands of the 80's...say hello to The Jets.  In America they were somewhat famous for their family-brand of pop in which arguably they were the best family band to come along since, let's say...The Jackson 5.  I have no clue if they were big in England, but I can't be bothered to research that today...

Most famous for their smash hits 'Crush On You', 'Make It Real' and 'You Got It All', The Jets were one of the funnest, slickest and colourful bands that kept on entertaining me immensely in the late 80's.  Their concert in Yakima, Washington was one of the first concerts I ever attended (where my sister sat on my shoulders to get a good view).  I SO wanted to be in the band, but since the main requirement was that you had to be a member of the Wolfgramm family, my dreams were crushed.  So sad.

Nevertheless - take a retro trip to pop-ville today and re-visit some of The Jets classic pop hits in our little video vault below.  What is my favourite Jets song of all time you ask?  Well, 'Rocket 2 U' tops the list followed quickly by 'Cross My Broken Heart' - it has those drum machine and synths that remind me of some of the Madonna songs of that time like 'Who's That Girl' and 'Causing A Commotion'.  'Rocket 2 U' was ahead of it's time - funky basslines, little electro synth bits dropped in and the costumes in the video are just as fresh today as they were back then...check it out.

Rocket 2 U
Crush On You
You Better Dance
Cross My Broken Heart
Make It Real
Private Number
I Do You
You Got It All

And if you were a big fan of The Jets, you will remember that Eugene left the band briefly to form 'Boys Club' with some cute dude who I can't remember the name of...Anyways...Boys Club even had a hit with 'I Remember Holding You' which you can see here...ahhh such retro goodness.

I Remember Holding You

Boys Kissing In The Snow - With A Nelson Clemente Soundtrack...

This little video mashup of Vincenzo's Electro Freak mix to Nelson Clemente's 'You Me Us We' and Israeli movie 'Yossi & Jagger' popped up on YouTube last week and it's kinda cute.  I haven't seen the movie yet, but <whoosh> did you hear that?  That was the sound of me rushing to my computer and renting it online.  There isn't anything more endearing than two boys kissing in the snow isn't there?  Unless it's two boys kissing in a tent on top of a mountain in Wyoming, cuz y'know, that's just epic.

Nelson Clemente's electro remix to my (and I quote) "Favourite Song Of The Year" is currently climbing the EQ chart again.  I am so hoping that Nelson will be making a video to this song soon!

Watch The New Pet Shop Boys Video To Integral

Integral3

Check out the new video for 'Integral' by The Pet Shop Boys.  It's somewhat weird and interesting all at the same time and touches upon the theme of ID cards and the "erosion of our civil liberties by the UK government" as according to the press release.

Click here to watch the video in Windows Media Format.

The Pet Shop Boys new album 'Disco 4' will be released on 8 October.

Oh - EQ would like to dedicate this post to loyal reader Ray Grant...for Ray always says we don't post enough news about the Pet Shop Boys on this site.  So Ray - this one is for you!  We're keeping it Technologic baby!

Darren Hayes - New Video to 'Words'

Darren Hayes released this gorgeous new video to 'Words' this morning and it's absolutely beautiful.  A tad eerie with the special effects, but the underlying message is very...well, judge for yourself.

"All those codes and hidden meanings...Full of metaphor..and something for the faithless in me."

Huge kudos to his hubby Richard Cullen for creating a beautiful mini-masterpiece - we can't wait to see more of his work with Darren - truly a collaboration made in heaven.

Dirty Disco Doll - They Are Boy Crazy

Dirtydiscodoll

Say Hello to Dirty Disco Doll - also known as singer/songwriter Saer Ze and music producer Ruben Debusschere.  They have a new electro single dropping soon called 'Boys I Like' which is saucy, sultry and a little sleazy all mixed together.  Check out the single cover eh!

Take a listen to the track below and if you are interested in hearing some remixes, make sure you check out their MySpazz page where you will also be treated to some lovely photos of boys who get Dirty Disco Doll all hot and bothered.

Sneaky Peeky - Behind The Scenes with Siobhan Donaghy and Rent Remixed Cast

OK - we got our tix for opening night and we are expected to be blown away by the new remixed production of 'Rent' starring Siobhan Donaghy.  Here's a little video diary that Siobhan made and if you stick with it, you can hear the cast rehearsing 'Seasons Of Love' at the very end.

We are still a little bit curious how this is all going to turn out - but even if it's bad production (which we hope it isn't) it will be nice to see Siobhan sing and dance for a few hours...cuz well, we just think she's brilliant.

Unklejam Live At Islington Academy

Unklejam1

Last night I made my way up to Islington Academy to check out Unklejam as it's been awhile since I last saw them and I was a tad bit curious to see how those electro-soul songsters have been getting on since.  They were nothing short of fantastic to say the least.  What I love about Adonistar, Bobby and Tyson is that the boys got personality.  They are entertainers and in a day and age where most aspiring popstars just get up on stage and and be-bop around to their own tunes that no one really knows, Unklejam deliver - you can't take your eyes off of them while they perform their funked-out, super-freak electro numbers so flawlessly and effortlessly.  They are a marvel to watch live.

Opening the show with a crazy guitar-laced intro to their hit 'Love Ya', you get a flavor for the ride you are about to be taken on - it's an electrified sonic delight to hear them live.  One would think that the boys might save their second hit, 'What Am I Fighting For?' for a little later in the show, but they don't.  The boys dive right into it after 'Love Ya' and every person in the room singing and dancing right along with them.

Unklejam2

"Bobby Unklejam:  So we were at London Fashion week last night and this model comes up to us and says 'dahling, were have you been?'  And I replied...YOU don't want to know..."  Saucy.

The best performance of the night was 'Touch' - the synths on this number were outstanding but when the boys mash it up with an electrified cover of 'Seven Nation Army' the crowd went fucking ballistic.  It seems every band feels the need to cover 'Sexyback' these days in their live shows, but Unklejam dig out an alternative anthem to show the crowd that they are just that 'little bit different' from everyone else.  'Don't Pass Me By' was incredible as well and their new single 'Stereo' - a fab number that got everyone singing - make sure you buy a copy of the new single when it hits the usual physical and digital outlets.

At the end of the set the boys did 'Just Like Me' which really showcases their vocal talent and it's a standout track that we can't to hear again when their debut album drops next month.  All-in-all a great night out with the Unklejam boys.  We hear they are also headlining 'Electro Go Go'  in London on 4th October with the indie electro-pop songsters Huski and well, we may just be tempted to go see them again - they were that good.

It's really incredible to watch Unklejam get bigger and bigger - the Islington Academy was packed to the rafters last night.  If you like a little soul spread on your electro crackers - a little Unklejam will make you eat the whole damn box.

Darren Hayes Tour Rehersal Blog / Arjan reports on new Seal album!

As you know one of the things we love about Darren Hayes is that he is a dedicated blogger.  Even after the promotion for 'This Delicate Thing We've Made' subsides and The Time Machine Tour is done and dusted and on it's way to DVD, we will still faithfully read Darren's blogs because - well the man is just funny.

Check out this video blog he posted last night which gives you a sneaky peeky into his tour rehearsals and check out the new 'keytar' that Shave is sporting.  Loving it.

And this got us really excited this morning...

Head on over to Arjan Writes to read about Seal's new album which is being produced by none other than Stuart Price!  It's news like this that really gets our motor running on a Tuesday morning and we haven't even finished our Starbucks yet.  Thanks Arjan!

We also will be doing a review of the fantastic Unklejam show we went to last night.  Stay tuned EQs.

The Electroqueer Fold: Madison

Madison

Artist: Madison

Amazing Because:  Madison is an incredible individual.  We can't quite remember how we heard about him, but from the moment he took to the stage at Popshow with his striking style and exuberance, we knew he was something special.  Marrying his love for fashion with an electro musical palate, we are never disappointed by his upbeat and delectable tracks.  'Move Your Ass' and 'Club' are some of the funnest songs we've heard all year and an EP or album can't get released fast enough in our opinion.  Drawing his style from an 80's repertoire and fusing it with a modern day edge and underlying sexual innuendo - this young man has a lot to offer...

Why He's EQ:  Madison isn't afraid to take risks.  From his striking stage costumes to his finely choreographed dance moves, Madison isn't bowing down to any stereotype of what a pop star should be.  His love for fashion is incomparable and his love for music is very similar to our own tastes.  It's hard to talk to Madison about anything other than music and style because you get drawn into his unique vision so quickly.  There isn't another artist out now who is doing what Madison is doing.  He couldn't be anymore EQ if we asked him to.

Re-visit some of Madison's live performances below and if you want to read about all things fashion with Madison, check out his fashion and style blog - it's rather good too...

Pay-TV: A Few Things

Pay

» Those three girls above (Chanelle, Claudia and Neena) make up Pay-TV and this may or may not be the cover of their long overdue album literally direct from Sweden.

» If it is their album cover, and we suspect it is, because it came in an email asking where to send album promos to, then it is a stroke of genius.

» It is almost like there is a CSI crime scene in their home. Where they are the people who are dead.

» Of course, this is just a photoshoot and this isn't their intuitive way of gaining some publicity, because nothing screams 'headlines' more than a triple murder-suicide pact.

» The song that they are touting around to try and get a 'buzz' going again after the 'buzz' that they had many years ago, when they were stars singing for Sweden in the Eurovision, is 'Fashion Report' and this is either what they have chosen to name their album after, or and we're beginning to think this is the case, that may just be the single's cover above (which is still amazing even if this is the case).

» On their Myspace you can hear 'Fashion Report', which is fucking glorious and not in the sense that it is a mistitled Natalie Imbruglia cover.

» There is also a version of Madonna's 'Material Girl' on their Myspace, which is highly listenable and much better than Hilary Duff's version, which we were addicted to for a while. In a word: brilliant.

» Sadly - :( - though, their influences include George W Bush. Or maybe, in an emoticon 'flip' - :) - their album might include a song that is just them listing every single failure of Bush's presidency to date with some disco background music. We recommend calling it 'Fuckwit'.

» That last bit is just our little idea which is probably not going to happen, mainly because we doubt it would be viable to have a song that is 27 hours long on their album.

Sugababes Live At Indigo2

It's been awhile since I saw the Sugababes live.  The last time was more than a few years ago when 'Angels With Dirty Faces' was tearing up the album charts and the Sugababes were toasting their first number one single with 'Freak Like Me' - a brilliant electro track that still is and will always be, well brilliant to me.

So when I was invited along to see the Sugababes perform at the new state-of-the-art Indigo2 venue at the O2 last Friday night to hear them perform some of their new material from 'Change', I knew that it was time to give the babes another whirl.  I have to be honest, I sorta lost interest in the babes after 'Three' came out and since Mutya left I was pretty much thinking that the Sugababes brand was slowly overcooking, but they've had quite a number of fab pop songs that I like and they aren't shy to play around with a bit of electronica so hey, why not go along and see what new material they have in store, eh?

First of all - I just have to get this out of the way...The Indigo2 is amazing.  Stunning design, outstanding sound system, air-conditioned and this is the killer...courteous and polite bar staff!  I had three bar staff offering to serve me at a busy bar.  I couldn't believe it!  Usually at gigs you have to queue for what seems like forever to get a dixie cup filled with alcohol only for them to overcharge you for it in return.  But they definitely know what they are doing at the Indigo2...so just wanted to say thanks to those O2 guys - great job.  You're role in a night out is just as important as the talent on stage and you made it work guys.  I love ya and since I love the O2, you can bet that I won't be changing my mobile phone network provider anytime soon.

OK - so the Sugababes come on after being an hour late than the advertised stage time which normally doesn't bother me, but it twas a bit annoying.  OK I can forgive them for it being that there was a lot of technical stuff to work out for the Channel 5 filming, but since the DJ pre-show music consisted primarily of Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado, Beyonce, Timbaland, The Black Eyed Peas, Fergie and Shakira...I found myself somewhat bored due to the lack of imagination in the pre-show music.  Kinda boring to the extreme, but the crowd seemed to enjoy it more than me - and I know, I'm just an electro bitch, I know, I know...I won't hold that against anyone else who was having a good time.

Heidi, Keisha and Amele look great.  They opened with 'Hole In The Head' and 'Round Round' which are great classic pop songs.  I did get a little excited when they took to their stools and delivered 'Overload' in which Keisha asked the audience to overlook the line 'skipping school gotta walk for air' as she tells us she was just the tender age of fifteen when she recorded that.  It was rather noticable too why the girls chose Amele to replace Mutya...they have VERY similar husky voices and in a band like the Sugababes who need that sorta distinction, it was a wise decision - even if Amele has the tendancy to get in the odd bar fight every once in awhile...it's funny to read about.

The babes sang three new songs from 'Change'.  First off was the best one in my opinion, the title track 'Change'.  It was really good - catchy and thoughtful.  They also sang 'Denial' which was ok.  Not as good as 'Change' but it was ok, not bad.  However when they sang their new single 'About You Now'...we weren't so impressed.  I dunno, I don't like this style of song.  It reminds me of a McFly song.  It's not the cool-esqe style that I have come to know from the Sugababes.  My mate Ross agrees with me - it doesn't work for either of us.  People will disagree and other blogs call this song 'amazing' but you know what, I don't think it is...The Sugababes are obviously saving some of their better material for future singles.  But the single will do well with the kids and the teenagers and if that's what you need to do, then hey, do it.

We were feeling the most enjoyment though when the girls were tucking into their hits.  'Too Lost In You' was amazing.  Heidi told us the story of how they met Diane Warren before recording this song that she wrote.  'Caught Up In The Middle' was fun and the girls even paid tribute to Primal Scream by doing their cover version of rock classic 'Get Ya Rocks Off' which was really good.  I quite enjoyed their stomping performance of 'Red Dress' and their acoustic breakdown of 'Ugly' made me smile.  The girls made me quite happy by encoring with 'Freak Like Me' and their massive hit 'Push The Button' to close out the show and overall, it was an ok evening.  Suprisingly enough, the babes didn't sing 'Easy'...what's up with that?!

I feel that I may be getting a bit older now to really appreciate the Sugababes brand of pop and the new direction they may be going in, but you know what, they are maintaining that youthful image brand that sells them many of cds and hey that's ok.  For as long as the Sugababes keep putting out CDs, I'll proabably keep buying them as I prefer them to Girls Aloud anyday.  The babes are sophisticated women and I hope that their careers either solo or in the band keep going from strength to strength.

And Heidi...she's just oh so pretty...sigh.

Working 9 to 5 - Wish I Could Rant For A Living...

Hello EQs...we are taking a commercial break from our ongoing Electroqueer Fold feature to have a little time to rant with you all.  It's been a tough week mentally for your royal EQ-ness but I am surviving more or less.  I started eating healthy again too so that my energy levels will improve and to also shed some of the extra baggage I seem to have put on since meeting my noodle and I am absolutely loving it.  Although I still do have an intensive craving for cupcakes, but I am reserving the right to indulge myself with a cupcake until Darren's show at the Royal Albert Hall on October 3rd.  So Clare honey, you better deliver on that cupcake offer!  [Inside joke - sorry].  So - on with the rants...

  1. Tonite Ross (I hate Geri Halliwell) and myself are going to check out the Sugababes live at the Indigo2 as it's a thing that's being taped for Channel 5 or some shizz like that.  Apparently they are debuting their as-ye-unheard material from their new album.  Should be interesting.  Gosh I loved the Sugababes right up until Mutya left, so now it doesn't quite feel the same - but I am hoping to be amazed tonite nevertheless.  Actually if they just do 'Freak Like Me' that will suffice.  What can you expect for free anyways?
  2. So Antigone is finishing her album tonite too as she is in the mastering studio as we speak...Congrats Tigs and thank you for popping my solar system cherry the other day...sorry, another inside joke.  Everyone send Antigone loads of messages on MySpace ok!  She's worked really hard on this album and deserves some lovin...but if you buy the album too when it comes out, I'm sure she'd be over the moon too.
  3. Roisin Murphy is turning me out.  Have been loving all the XOLondon pimpage on this lovely electronic lady.
  4. ALL YOU LADIES WHO ARE DRESSING LIKE AMY WINEHOUSE AROUND LONDON.  Please fucking stop - she isn't a style icon y'know and you don't look cute if you dress like her...it's getting insane.
  5. Now if these same ladies dressed like Kelly Osbourne, that would be a different story - cuz my girl Kelly is looking amazing these days in her Chicago getup...I just love her chubby cheeks - she cracks me the fuck up.
  6. Would you like Simon Curtis to play Pop Show in London in October?  I think so - send him an email and tell him to book his plane fair now.  Maybe we should all take up a collection and buy him a ticket to show him how much we need him over here.  Simon - your British fan club awaits y'know...you are already a superstar Mr. Messiah.
  7. I want to steal one of the RENT posters with Siobhan Donaghy on them that are taking over the London Underground.  I want one!  Can you get arrested for stealing a poster off the tube?  Give us your legal advice.
  8. Have you heard Ashwin Khanna's version of 'I Knew I Loved You' by Savage Garden?  It's so sweet...There are tiny moments when Ashwin really sounds like Darren Hayes...Give cutie pituti Ashwin some words of support over at his MySpace.
  9. Also fucking turning me out is Hydra Productions...They are a dance collaboration whose debut album will be completed this fall and will feature the guest vocals of Stacey Q, Tiffany and Giora from Expose.  Check out their track 'Dust Off And Dance' on their MySpace which rocks my socks - hard...expect more Hydra Productions coverage on EQ...
  10. And speaking of Stacey Q...we almost died when we found this YouTube clip of her performing on Solid Gold in the 80's.  I used dance around my bedroom to this song like a proper gay boy from the sticks who wished he could have been a Solid Gold dancer.  God there is an image you didn't want to see...LOL.  We loved how Solid Gold cut off the songs after the main chorus to save time...Isn't it time Solid Gold came back y'all?...

The Electroqueer Fold: Sergey Lazarev

Sergey

Artist: Sergey Lazarev

Amazing Because:  We hardly pay attention to the music that is produced by foreign speaking countries such as Russia, but from the minute we discovered Sergey Lazarev's amazing electronic cover of 80's smash hit 'Shattered Dreams' by Johnny Hates Jazz, we knew this Russian popstar was something beyond the extraordinary.  If it wasn't for the power of the internet, we would have never found Sergey's super fine pop gems 'Fake', 'The Eye Of The Storm' and 'Everytime'.  He's also a superb dancer and performer and it's been awhile since a Russian pop act (ie: Tatu) has maintained our attention so effortlessly.  He's got the looks, the talent and it's high time that the whole world know about Sergey Lazarev.

Why He's EQ:  Although his songs from his first two albums 'Don't Be Fake' and 'TV Show' are mostly pop-based, there is an apparent electronic sprinkling throughout his tracks that make us sit up and go - 'hey that works'.  His music panders really well to radio, the club crowds, pop pushers of every persuasion and for anyone who gets a thrill from good ol power pop.  Just one listen to 'Shiver' and 'Can't Let You Go' will make any electronica junkie say 'you know what, it's a little pop...but I like it'.  What we like most about Sergey is that he hasn't even hit his prime yet - watch out EQs, he very well could come up something even more brilliant as he gets older...and he's certainly off to a running start.

Check out Sergey's music videos for a taste of this rising young talent...

The Electroqueer Fold: Imogen Heap

Imogen

Artist: Imogen Heap

Amazing Because:  Imogen heap marries technology and musical artistry in a very unique and powerful way.  When her last album 'Speak For Yourself' came out - it was revolutionary in our eyes.  It changed the way that we looked at music.  To us, Imogen is the Virgin Mary of electronic music.  A goddess to behold amongst the plethora of female artists that don't possess an ounce of her organic talent.  We are still discovering the brilliance of 'I Megaphone' as we are waiting impatiently for the first glimpse of the new tracks from her forthcoming as-yet-untitled third album.  We've only had one encounter with this magical lady, we saw her on Oxford Street eating a sandwich and that was enough to make us stop dead in our tracks and go 'whoa'.

Why She's EQ:  Imogen's music is unlike any else.  She's different in an era when artists strive for mediocrity.  Think Bjork and Kate Bush in their prime.  She also blogs in both video and written format quite frequently and seems really connected to her fans.  We love her.  Everyone should love her.  We haven't written much about Imogen Heap on this blog, but we don't have to - she's one of those artists that is so brilliant, that our words can barely touch upon how amazing she is.

Check out her outstanding music videos from 'Speak For Yourself' for yourself...

The Electroqueer Fold: Dragonette

Dragonette

Artist: Dragonette

Amazing Because:  Just look at them...Martina and her husband Dan are the picture of cool that Gwen and Gavin can't even come close to.  After waiting for almost a year for their debut album 'Galore' to come out, it's brilliant electropop goodness is finally available on iTunes for all to download and adore.  Hyped by bloggers worldwide, Dragonette never fail to deliver with their stunning imagery and their sharp lyrical wit that's spun into a edgy web of electro infused pop and rock.

Why they are EQ:  Well why wouldn't they be?  C'mon!  From the minute their debut single 'I Get Around' entranced us with it's hard electro synths, they had us under their spell.  Followed up with the infectious 'Take It Like A Man' and it's cheeky 70's style porn themed video, Dragonette couldn't be more EQ if they tried.  Add in a funky-fresh cover version of Calvin Harris' hit with a twist called 'The Boys' and top it off with our personal favourite 'Jesus Doesn't Love Me', Dragonette can't really do any wrong in our glamour school book.

Take a little peek at their videos and behind the scenes footage that just makes us giggle.  They so don't take themselves too seriously...and we love it.

The Electroqueer Fold: Dangerous Muse

Dm_4

Artist: Dangerous Muse

Amazing Because:  Sexy synth boys Mike Furey and Tom Napack from New York blend in first-class electronica with an old school sensibility that speaks to a MTV now generation.  'The Rejection' has to be one of the finest electronic numbers go viral on the internet and the boys are close to debuting their latest video to 'Give Me Danger' very soon.  Dangerous Muse can't churn out an album fast enough for their ever-growning fan base - so far we've gotten two single remix EPs from them, but it never hurt for a band to keep their fans in a fit of frenzied anticipation did it?

Why they are EQ:  Obviously their knack for producing some brilliant electronica.  The boys also have a deep appreciation for Depeche Mode and have been known to perform on the decks as DJs for DM club nights.  Dangerous Muse = a new Depeche Mode...it could very well possibly be...

Why not take a quick look at their video to 'The Rejection' if you haven't seen it already.  Sure it's been out for a long time and isn't really new anymore, but it's still bloody brilliant (even if the YouTube video is slightly out of sync).  We can never get tired of hearing this track.  We love the whole girls who like boys, who like boys, who like girls, who like girls thing going on this video.  HOT.

Not Really A Rant, But Definitely Random...

So Geri and I went and saw '1408' over the weekend.  I can't quite decide if I liked it or if I just thought it was crap.  It's somewhere in the middle for me.  I actually am dying to see 'Waitress' (mostly because I adore Keri Russell) but I missed it when it was in Central London so now I might just have to wait until it comes out on DVD.  I did polish off Season 3 of Battlestar Galactica which was ok, but the ending was amazing.  I was shocked to find out who the Final Five Cylons were!  Gasp!  'Dexter' Season 1 continues to enthrall me.  Michael C. Hall is just an incredible actor I think - he does creepy but lovable very very well.  Oh and my 'Heroes' Season 1 boxset arrived last night too and Geri and I stayed up way too late watching this after we spent far too much money on dinner at a Korean BBQ place in Soho.

So I am not really going to rant here...well ok, let's just throw a few ones in for good measure...

  • It unanimous - everyone hated the MTV Music Awards in Las Vegas!
  • 4th Child's debut single 'Now I Found You' is out today - GO BUY IT.
  • That Maps album...not diggin it so far, but we still like that song.
  • Simon Curtis sent a few bloggers a new song called 'Another Heartache' which is quite good.  It reminds me of another song I can't quite think of, but it's definitely got an obvious Backstreet Boys melody to it.  I like it.  I don't like the Backstreet Boys, well not the famous ones for that matter.

OK done.  So...what I wanted to say is that the rest of this month, we are going to be focusing on the The EQ Fold primarily.  Each EQ Fold artist will have their own page of why we think they are out-of-this-world and why they deserve more than just a few moments of your listening time.  We will focus on the some of the less talked about EQ Fold members to begin with and probably wrap it up with Robyn or Darren Hayes since we talk about them all the time...and speaking of Mr. Hayes...

Yesterday I got all fucking emotional as I was listening to 'This Delicate Thing We've Made' again and in particular 'Step Into The Light' in which I immediately wrote an 'Inside EQ' blog afterwards about the most painful part of my life and how this song really 'went there' for me.  After the blog was up for about an hour, I took it down because I felt it was too much for everyone to read.  Now once you publish a blog, it actually goes out to the whole world wide web and you can't take it back (well at least in my blog settings)...So if anyone read it...that's cool - I hope you liked it.  If anyone else would like to to read it - I'll send it you - I'm totally cool with that.  I only just ask that you don't re-publish it or link to it cuz well, let's just say I need a little time before I post it for the whole world to read again.

Sneaky Peeky...

Darren posted this sneak peek image from his Me, Myself and (I) video today.

Update:  Darren also posted this (ahem) flawless mashup to his new song as well.  Enjoy - thanks Maggz.

And On A Lighter Electronic Note...

L_60b1745b1cb6ff92cdbdc8674e5f9614

I am totally loving this song called 'It Will Find You' from Maps.  I never heard of them before their performance on The Mecury Prize Awards, but I am really diggin them.  I am off to buy their album now called 'We Can Create'...there also seems to be an album sampler available for download on their MySpace Page if you're interested.

Robyn Live At Bush Hall

Dsc00505

Ok so I almost didn't make it to the show last night.  Geri couldn't get coverage at the Tate Modern and my friend who was supposed to come bailed at the very last minute because he started moaning about getting home too late, so I said, 'oh fuck it', and decided to go on my lonesome to see Robyn at Bush Hall because well, I really wanted to.  So armed with two extra tickets and no date (poo hoo), I made my way to my old stomping ground Shepherds Bush to check out Robyn's live show again.

Robyn's bandmate buddy Kleerup opened for her and I only caught the last 5 minutes of his what seemed to be a DJ set, but from what I heard it was very cool.  I can imagine that this man is going to be working for quite awhile in the electronic idoymn as he has got some killer laptop skills - I think I might have to check out some of his solo stuff because I am quite curious about his sound now and if I'm curious, I'm sure some other EQ readers might be as well.

So Robyn, yeah - she was amazing as usual.  Her setlist hasn't changed all that much from her shows at Cargo or Dingwalls but everytime I've seen her show I always take away something new that I hadn't before.  For example, I'd never really paid too much attention to 'Keep This Fire Burning' before, in which Robyn explained to the crowd that it was a song she wrote that Beverly Knight had actually recorded.  This was a standout song last night - don't know why, but I really was getting into it and enjoyed it immensely.

Robyn was noticeably more chatty last night on stage too.  This is something I really love and it's the sole reason I love going to live shows.  Sure it's nice to see the artists sing and dance around, but it's the chatter in between songs that really makes a good and unique concert going experience for moi.  Before Robyn sang 'Handle Me' (her new single) she told us that the song was about all those guys who think they are the shit, but really aren't.  LOVE IT.  Some other fun quips were 'You know if you guys keep coming to my shows I might get to release another single - and this could be one of em' - this came right before 'Be Mine'.  A song which in my opinion stands a fighting chance at being another UK Number One for our powerhouse princess.

One would also expect a long diatribe right before launching into the single that defined them as their first UK Number One selling artist, but Robyn didn't.  She went right into 'With Every Heartbeat' without drawing attention to that aforementioned - but from the second the synth started flowing into the sweaty humid air - the crowd went wild.  I got goosebumps.  It was such a treat to watch her perform this song this time round.  You could tell that she was proud of that moment - and very well she should have been proud.

So in the end - I'm glad I went.  I'd been a daft fool not to go - Robyn shows are SO worth it and I can't wait to see Robyn's career get bigger and bigger as time goes on - it's a treat to watch a hard working musician go from strength to strength for all of their hard work.

Note: Bush Hall was the sweatiest gig I've ever been to EVER for any artist... No air con.  No fans.  No noticable ventilation.  But a little sweat never hurt anyone right?

A Mini Rant For Today...

Hello EQs - I am pretty much tied to my chair in streaming media land and am finding it hard to find five minutes to dedicate to EQ today, but don't despair, I have a mini-rant for you...Yes, I can hear the cheers from far far and away...yeah right.

  • So it may be almost next to impossible for me to make it to the Glasgow show of Darren Hayes 'Time Machine Tour'...It's a 50/50 chance now and I'm a little bummed-out about it cuz I already have tickets and everything but there isn't much I can do (a work thing...argh).  I'm sending out a message to the fates that somehow they will allow me to go to opening night...if not - there's always Royal Albert Hall.  If anyone in Glasgow wants to do a guest blog on the show for me - I'll give you my tickets...email me!
  • Nelson Clemente has some new demos up on his MySpace page - you have to scroll down to the indie store player, but they are worth checking out.
  • Just as I suspected, new EQ fave 4th Child is playing at the next Popshow on 27 October.  Yay!  EQ Number 1 single 'Now I Found You' officially drops on Monday and you can order your copy here.  It's one of the best songs I've heard this year - No kidding.

Uhhh...that's it for today.  More on the Robyn gig tomorrow....

Can You Handle Robyn?

Image001

So tomorrow night we are off to see Robyn again at Bush Hall and we are pretty excited about it.  It's the kickoff to her UK Tour to coincide with her new single release 'Handle Me' which is one of our favourite pop songs of this year (god how many times have we said this?) - to be released on download 22 October and the physical release a week later.

We do have one wish...we are hoping that Robyn does remake the video to the song as the current version looks a little dated - you can check out our little video vault and interview with Robyn here if you are interested (and you very well should be).

So how will Robyn's live show change now that she's a UK Number One artist?  Will she pull a Nelly Furtado and throw tons of money, lights, dancers and props on the stage?  Or will she keep it as simple, grungy yet all very elegant as her last two shows?  Well stick around EQ's cuz we'll let you know!  Hey, I know a few of you EQs are going to be there - make sure you say hello!

The Chemical Brothers Create a Fucked up Nursery Rhyme...

and it's apparently their new single called 'The Salmon Dance'.

We aren't kidding.

We think it's fucking hilarious...

And if that wasn't silly enough...check this Daft Punk homeade, funny shizz out...

State City Disco Interview and Download: It's like eating a whole box of Party Rings!...

Statecitydiscolive

EQ is definitely loving the stylish and sexy synth sounds of State City Disco and we got a chance to catch up with Alex and Mitzi from the band to talk about Temposhark, 80's influence in today's music, how they got their name and what the heck happened to Veto Silver!

Well hello State City Disco and welcome to EQ.  Go on introduce yourselves to the readers...
We’re a new electro-pop band whose sound could be best described as Nick Rhodes meets Lady Sovereign and they go and set fire to a pile of tyres in a car park in Peckham, while drinking Bacardi Breezers. But in a good way. State City Disco in your face - LOL.

Cool - now that we got that out of the way, tell us about 'Excitement'. Are you excited about this trac
