MySpace Discovery: Ming & Ping

Mingping_2

When Simon Curtis told us about Ming & Ping we didn't pay too much attention - not because we weren't interested, but mostly because we were too busy on holiday soaking up the sun and sand.  However, we were recently reminded of them again and we had a listen to their tunez and wow - are we impressed or what!  Ming & Ping's electronic track 'Beautiful Things' is absolutely amazing.  Taking a little listen to their other tracks on MySpace - well let's just say that it's enough for us to go out right now and purchase their album 'Causeway Army' which is available on iTunes.

And how about their album cover eh?  Flawless.  Discover Ming & Ping for yourself right here or here.

Young Love - Electronic Press Kit

EQ Folder Young Love (aka Dan Keyes) has just unveiled a new and rather good electronic press kit that highlights a little more about his background and what sort of electronic groups inspires him - like Daft Punk for example.

We are hoping to catch Young Love tonight in Camden as he and his band performs small club dates in the UK before doing some gigs in Germany and then back to Texas.  Young Love's album 'Too Young To Fight It' is one of our favourites this year and if you have a chance to download it - just do it.  For those of you in the USA it's rather easy to get your hands on a copy, but if you are in the UK, you'll find that the album is FINALLY on iTunes!

Unklejam nominated for a MOBO Award

Unklejam

Those electro soul daddies Tyson, Bobby and Adonis, otherwise known as Unklejam have scooped themselves up a nomination for 'Best Newcomers' in the UK's prestigious MOBO awards.  Their fantastic new single 'Stereo' also drops on Monday as well so make sure you pick up or download a copy of it pronto and support some good electronic music by this uber talented threesome.

No It's Not Nadine Coyle...It's Belinda!

Belinda

This was a suprising gem found in our inbox today.  Say hello to a latin american superstar named Belinda who has just finished her first english single called
'If We Were' which is (shall we say it...) suprisingly EQ.

Take a little listen to it below...we likes it!  Not bad.

Listen to 'Nite Runner' by Duran Duran featuring Justin Timberlake and Timbaland...

So one of my favourite bands from the 80's, Duran Duran have ALSO jumped on the Timbaland bandwagon and are working with him and Justin Timberlake on their new album 'Red Carpet Masacre' which is due out late October.

I'll leave this for you all to discuss.  Listen to the new single 'Nite Runner' above.  Quite frankly, I'm not that excited by what I hear...even though I still think Simon Le Bon 'has it and always will'.  You will however probably catch me again at the next Duran Duran tour cuz I fuckin love these boys - even if they are selling out a bit to gain mass market appeal.  It's a Nelly Furtado debacle all over again - boo hoo.

And just to prove that this is infact happening, here's an EPK for you...

"Prisionero" Music Video by Miranda!

Fabulous.

And it isn't even in English.

Who knew an Argentinian synth band named Miranda! could be so damn lucious?

Fucking Fabulous.

We've had our tea...now it's time for our thoughts on 'This Delicate Thing We've Made' Disc 2

Well - like the album insert says, I've had my tea as instructed and popped in disc 2 of Darren Hayes 'This Delicate Thing We've Made' and I've had plenty of time to let it marinate for a few weeks.  Here is what I have to say about it...

Unlike my first review, which I felt was somewhat rushed in retrospect (sorry), this review will focus on the songs I really like on disc 2.  This disc doesn't work for me as easily as disc 1 does to be absolutely honest.  A lot of the momentum and movement that is experienced on disc 1 is lost and replaced with start and stop moments in the way of ballads mixed with electro tracks.  The songs themselves aren't bad (infact they are bloody brilliant), but I think they are just mis-ordered to my personal liking really.  And really, that's not saying much considering that I am no mix master wizard by any stretch of the imagination.  But, if I were going to create a double album like this, I would have put all the electro tracks on disc 1 and the slower tempo tracks on disc 2 - just to give it a bit more separation of genre.  That is just my personal opinion.  Now I am sure Darren has his reasons for doing it the way he did, but with 25 songs and the power of iTunes playlists, you can almost create your own album order which is great.  But enough of my insignificant thoughts on that...here's what I like about disc 2.

Delicate1

'The Future Holds A Lions Heart' is a thunderstorm of electricity.  An almost angry track - it's a great way to start disc 2.  It's a full on slap in the face and I get the impression that it's message is saying to 'look very hard at yourself you naive young thing'.  There's more to life than youth and beauty.

'On The Verge Of Something Wonderful' is one of my favourite tracks on the album and was the perfect choice for the first single.  Whenever Darren played this live at Club Delicacy it was such a fun song to watch him perform.  'Verge' seems to be the right combination of electro, pop and rock stylings with a sprinkling of retro added on the top in the form of the music video.  I am hoping that Darren also follows this same video art direction in his upcoming video to 'Me, Myself and (I)' which we should be seeing online sometime very soon.

'Neverland' is kinda fun.  I imagine Darren is living out a sort of Peter Pan like musical fantasia in this track.  I see him opening up little mysterious treasure chests of whimsy in this almost childlike track, leaping from lillypad to lillypad.  Has he gone back in the time machine to ask himself all sorts of questions about what he what he would change about his life?

Well, let's just say that 'Me, Myself and (I) is our favourite song on disc 2.  We are playing it over and over again.  It's on repeat.  It's our ringtone on our mobile phone.  It's bloody brilliant.  The best part about this song is towards the end at 2 minutes, 56 seconds...you know which part I am talking about?!  You know, the bip, bip, be-bip, bip part.  It's almost unbelievable to witness Shave playing this live on the keys - his fingers do actually move that fast!  We wonder what sort of exercises Shave must do to perfect this type of finger movement.  Darren's vocals are outstanding on this track too.  "When we met, it was like futureshock."  Woo-hoo is right Darren.

Delicate2

'I Just Want You To Love Me'...very sad song - it's been awhile since Darren has poured his heart out like this and exposed his inner self the way he does in this beautiful song.  We certainly didn't hear a song like this on 'Tension and the Spark' now did we?  The same thing has to be said about 'Words' as well.  It's just Darren and a piano that the man himself has described as 'aural sex' and you know - that pretty much sums it up.

'Setting Sun' is amazing.  An dark, electro pumping muscle of a track that I adore.  'Tuning of Violins' is the perfect track to close the album with.  It's a very English track, uplifting, and we know that Darren has finally found his place in this world.  He's found his destiny and through a very long dark journey over two albums, Darren Hayes is a happy man and it's quite evident.

Some b-side tracks that didn't make it on the album like 'Love Is In Everything', 'God Is In The Room' and 'Ocean' are excellent tracks as well that you should try to get your hands on if you can.  Even more songs to add to your delicate thing playlist.

Delicate3

So that's it EQs.  That's what I think about this epic of a double album Darren Hayes has done.  The wait was long but worth it.  Like I said earlier - no words I say are enough to properly describe every emotion and ounce of work that Darren has put into this musical opus.  We are certain that upon future listens of 'delicate' that we will discover even more little treasures of musical wonderment along the way - for this is what an epic double-album is all about isn't it?

Thompson Twins Retro Rewind Part I

Thompson_twins

Awhile back we posted about one of our favourite 80's bands, The Thompson Twins and as yesterday seemed to be a big day in Thompson Twins appreciation with Modern Fabulosity's excellent post on them and an Official Thompson Twins page cropping up on MySpace (which is very good), we'd thought we'd kick off our little retrospective on the band today.

Above is one of our favourite photos of the band in their hayday and I first remember seeing this photo in Smash Hits magazine way back in 1985.  The Thompson Twins album 'Here's To Future Days' was one of the first cassette tapes we bought right next to Wham!'s 'Make It Big' and Madonna's 'Like A Virgin'.  It was then that a young EQ got attached to the outrageous hair, outfits and brilliant electronica the band consistently put out.

It kinda eerks me that The Thompson Twins perceive themselves as a failure now.  Or at least that is the perception I get from watching the 'where are they now' specials that find our way onto our tellys.  I would never consider them a failure by any means - they were to me one of the most influential pioneers in electronic-based music in the 80's.  Surely when Joe Leeway left the band and Tom and Alannah went on to create Babble, well yes...that never really sat well with me - but I will never think of The Thompson Twins as a failure - ever.  They have an extensive back catalog of hits that are begging to be covered and they are prime candidates for a proper reunion these days when electronic music is being recognized and welcomed again in today's techno-savvy world.  We're begging the band to get together - at least for one show in London.

So as a first part to our retrospective, let's take a little look at some of their early and slightly strange videos that still sound fresh in my humble opinion.

Listen All You People - To bim!

Those lovely acoustic/electro/pop crooners bim have put out their debut cd that you should buy right now for a 6 quid bargain over at this lovely MySpace link.  bim is one of the most surprising finds we have stumbled across this year and their songs are nothing short of magical.  'The Battle' was an EQ Chart number one and is worth the 6 quid in of itself.  Just take a look at the lovely art direction on the cd cover too - absolutely stunning.

We have a good feeling about bim and you really should be one of the first to support their inspired and beautiful tunes.  Need we say more?

Let's Get Sergey Into some UK Clubs, What Do You Reckon?...

Whoa.  EQ reckons Sergey might do very well on a club tour of the UK...wouldn't you agree?  Here he is performing a club mix to 'Fake' and is pretty much oozzing sexuality.  Well say it again. Whoa.

Tracey Thorn Sends Out Grand Canyon Remixes

Tracey

EQ Folder and Everything But The Girl vocalist Tracey Thorn has released remixes of her beautiful electronic song 'Grand Canyon' to clubs in Ibiza recently.  Although she has said on her MySpace that there is no official plans yet for a commercial release (note the Ada remix is her new profile song), we are hoping that she chooses to release this song as her next single as it's our favourite (followed closely by 'Falling Off A Log') from her stellar album 'Out Of The Woods' that was released awhile back.

To hear and download the remixes for yourself, here are a couple of links that have been floating around the interweb.  If you haven't purchased her album or downloaded 'Grand Canyon' yet, you really should - it's an amazing piece of work from one of the most legendary voices in electronica.  We are still waiting and hoping for Tracey to announce some showcase gigs of her new solo material when she returns from holiday...

I Found A Place...Where We Can Rant Tonight

Hello EQs and Happy Sunday. It's Raj here. I'm sitting here in my Dolce & Gabanna pajamas that Geri bought me in Sicily and as elegant as that sounds, it really isn't! I'm drinking Nescafe and playing with my Teen Titans action figures all whilst writing this blog. It's geeky to the extreme. Don't tell anyone. So it's been awhile since I ranted and there have been a few music type things floating around in me head, so let's get it on...

  • Last night Geri and I went clubbing by ourselves which we haven't done in awhile. Booty Luv seems to be ruling the clubs now aren't they. 'Boogie2Nite' is a fantastic song to dance too and we are loving the album sampler by these fine ladies - their new album could just be the dance record of the year. This was one group I didn't think I would like, but they are really turning me out - as well as Samuel! Who doesn't like a bit o booty then?
  • 'Hook Me Up' by The Veronicas. Fucking electro flawlessness. Who knew?!
  • Is it just me that isn't excited by this Kylie X stuff? It's kinda 'eh'. Check back with me later on this.
  • That leaked Madonna song 'The Beat Goes On'...Oh dear. Oh dear. Dreadful. What is happening?
  • I love all the big hype of the Spice Girls Reunion. The girls get together for one day and record some promo and it's called a reunion?! Where is the new music? Where is the new video? Maybe when they actually go on tour I might actually take an interest, although I never was a huge fan. Give me Duran Duran anyday in any format over this.
  • Why wasn't Emily or Jade arrested? For fucks sake. What a bunch of crap.
  • Oooh - Season 4 of Nip/Tuck is out on dvd. Season 3 of Battlestar Galactica is coming in a week or so. Excuse me while I glue myself to the plasma for a few weeks.
  • 4th Child's 'Now I Found You' is now out for digital download. Go download it. I may be wrong, but I thinks that 4th Child will be performing at the next Popshow in October, in which they have taken my advice and moved it to Saturday night! Yay!
  • Dragonette's album 'Galore' is also ready for digital download consumption now. Go download it too - that band rocks my shockbox off.
  • And finally, we leave you with yet ANOTHER video by Sergey Lazarev. I don't know what it is about this pop tart that I love so much - his music just clicks with me. Here is his super sexy video to 'Lost Without Your Love' which gets a little synthy, so of course - I LOVE IT. Until all of you admit that you love Sergey too - we aren't gonna stop talking about him. Go on, admit it...

Oh what the hell - here's a little video mashup to his song 'Shiver' too which gives me the shh....

Vampires and Sergey Lazarev in a vest...What more could you want from a pop video?

Yes - it's the video for Sergey Lazarev's 'Eye Of The Storm'...do tell us when you are getting sick of all this Sergey coverage...

Tracey Young Remixes Stevie Nicks - Stand Back!

When this landed in our inbox, we knew it was something to write about! Legendary rock diva Stevie Nicks has recently got the remix treatment by no one other than Tracey Young! The result is a fun, updated and groovy funtastic new remix to her classic 'Stand Back'. Hurry up and order a copy from Perfectbeat as there are only about 1000 copies in existence which you can preview and buy here. It's the most perfect pop, electro and retro treat we've received all week!

Take a look at someone's homemade little video mashup to it as well...

The Electric Dolls - Live Pix from Cafe De Paris

Dsc00482

The Electric Dolls delivered a great set of songs last night in London's Cafe De Paris in the heart of the city.  After a glass of white wine we were thrilled to see the girls deliver their brand of electropop and attitude to the curious crowd.  We'll say it again - these girls are onto something.  There isn't another girl group out there that can even come close to the brilliance that is the Electric Dolls.

MySpace Discovery : Wideband Network

Wideband

So the band Wideband Network is a bit of a mystery to us.  They conjure up interesting artwork for their albums and singles but we never really get to see their faces much.  How very Daft Punk of them.  However, despite this, they have EQ in a hypnotic trance everytime their lovely song '95' comes up on le iPod.  You may have noticed the song climbing the EQ Chart as well - that's how good we think it is.

So if you are looking for a few good electronic tunes to utterly enthrall you today, like they do us, then check them out on MySpace right now.  If you like what you hear, then you can of course buy most of their material on iTunes as well.  We have been jamming out to their album 'Ten Thousand Seconds' which is a few years old - but you never will hear us complaining about an undiscovered band or track that deserves to be talked about.  Look out for their new single 'The Anatomy Of A Human Bomb' dropping into your stratosphere sometime soon...

Oh and what the heck, because we like his face so much - here is a little piccy of Casey from Wideband Network...

Does This Guy Named Bosson Float Your Boat?

Bosson

So very suprisingly, we have been listening to A LOT of pop music lately and taking a break from our sythesized and electric sounding tunes to discover some pop gems that we normally wouldn't listen to.  So today one of our EQ readers Stephen sent us an mp3 of the Swedish guy above who is named Bosson that he really digs.  And well, we kinda like his song too.

It's called 'Believe in Love' and you can take a wee listen to it below...

So what do you think?  If Bosson floats your boat - then why don't you check him out over on his MySpace page and make both Stephen and Bosson really happy.

What is this about? Booty Luv of course...

"Feels like some kinda of rush" - these words should have you wetting yourself in a manner that wouldn't be aloud on any of London's rather fine transport services. This is because those words between the two pieces of punctuation above greet you into the start of the best Booty Luv song since 'Shine'. They are therefore a form of brilliance on tap.

The song is called 'Some Kinda Rush' and as you might have heard somewhere else - is amazing. The problem is that because of all these buzzwords that are flying about, such as "piracy" and "illegal", we can't really put up a copy of the song for you to listen to, despite the fact that it is absolutely brilliant and deserves no more than to be listened to.

In fact, having listened to the Booty Luv album sampler until our ears feel as if they might be better suited to our rectum (this is a Booty Luv joke!) - we can tell you that the Booty Luv album, when it is released on September 17th, is looking to be one of those albums that you will not forget for the next ten years. This means that the Booty Luv album will sit beside such titles as 'Spice', 'Sound of the Underground' and our tip for years to come 'Insomniatic'.

But to give you a taster of how good 'Some Kinda Rush' is, let's just say that it well and truly has a rush in its music, going from 'soft and quiet' to 'loud and powerful'. This might not be the rush that they are on about, but it does exist without the drugs that we assume are involved in the 'Booty Luv rush'. There is also a mention of lust taking over their soul. Postcodes are mentioned. And so is the idea that they can't stop because, get this, they feel so alive, although not so alive that they don't get butterflies in their stomach.

Something else about Booty Luv you might be interested in - is a story that was published in the News of the World on Sunday. It was about how the Luv, in the blue dress, used to have an eating disorder but is now, thankfully, over it. We're not sure if this story was supposed to be a form of promotion for Booty Luv, or if she was paid £1,000 for her true life story. Frankly, we don't care because this is just the right time to stop talking about Booty Luv for now except to remind you to read the BOOTY LUV INTERVIEW!! Desperation? Of course.

Sergey Lazarev - Everytime

We literally are falling in muscial love with Sergey Lavarev everytime we hear his music.  He's divine.  He makes very good pop music, despite there not being much electro influence in it at all.  Here is his fab video to 'Everytime'.  It's a little old, but you don't mind do you?

We want to invite Sergey over to our house for tea.  Don't you?

Robyn Rewind At Cargo

So for those of you just recently catching the Robyn fever, here is a little Robyn Rewind for you which features some well done live clips of her performing at Cargo last March.  If you look closely enough, you'll notice EQ and friend Get Zoe in the audience doing the Rakamonie...Aargh!  We love it when she forgot the words to 'Handle Me' - she was so damn cute!  Read our review of the show here too...

Check out the new dance video by Out Of OFFice entitled 'Hands Up' which is a brilliant tribute to 80's teen comedy 'Weird Science'.  Remember that film?  I still love the scene where Chet turns into a blob of disgustingness...I digress, but this video is rather fun and HOT, as is the song - coming to a dancefloor near you soon...

We thinks Out Of OFFice is a DJ as seen on his MySpace page...and can we say, he's rather mighty fine.

MissMatch Interview: "We don't know about the orgasm thing…"

Another day on Electroqueer, and another interview: this time with an amazing Swedish popband called MissMatch. MissMatch started their career in the Swedish Melodifestivalen - a contest to pick the act that represents the country at Eurovision - and after that, released an album, 'Just Push Play', full of electro-pop smashes that can be brought here. They are also amazing to the fullest degree.

Mm

Hello Miss Match. Firstly, can we start by asking how the hell are we supposed to spell your band's name? Is it 'Miss Match', 'MissMatch' or something between the two?

It's MissMatch! We are two misses in a perfect match! We wanted to keep the words together just to make it a little bit crazy, just as we are! We think that being a little bit MissMatch makes the world a funnier place…

On the back of your album's cover – you have a picture of two dogs, with bows on them – making the dogs as sexy as dogs can be. Should all animals be more sexy? Should zoos start putting lipstick on the giraffes?

Of course! But they would have to make sure that they choose the right colour for their skintone.

As a group, you started your pop career performing on the Swedish Melodifestivalen – a contest to decide who would represent Sweden at the Eurovision. Sadly though, The Ark, not you won. Do you have any ill will towards The Ark?

Well thank you for the compliment! No, we don't have any ill will for The Ark. They are one of the bands in Sweden that we really like because of their good and artistic shows. We liked being in the same contest as them!

Next year, would you consider the idea of trying to get into the Eurovision by getting citizenship in a country that couldn't give a toss about the contest, such as the UK, and running for them?

Absolutely! We love Sweden, but we love MissMatch and performing even more, and music has no borderlines! Actually we have been flirting a lot with different country's men on our vacation this summer. We met a lot of cute French and Italian guys, so maybe one of us will get a proposal soon...!

Your album, as a whole, reminds us a lot of an exercise video with its "eleven step programme". Should more albums have commentary in them, including a prelude involving a man talking over the sounds of women who seem to be near orgasm?

(Laughs) Well, we don't know about the orgasm thing… we like to have fun and get crazy-creative in the studio, and this is the result of that… but of course everyone is free in their imagination.

Your album also has one of our favourite tracks on it – 'Unabashed' – which really is pop done the way it should be done. In our view it is better than ninety per-cent of what Britney Spears has made over the years. Is this something you would think?

Oh my god, that's a great compliment for us, 'cause we love Britney's albums. So it rather makes us inspired to do more pop albums in the future!

At the moment, your Wikipedia page is all of three lines long and it doesn't have a trivia page. Can you tell us something of a trivial fact about MissMatch for us to put on Wikipedia…

OK, we have some facts for you: we have known each other since we were 4 years old; we went to the same schools, parties and worked together. We have also always been neighbours. We grew up 30 seconds from each other and when we moved from our parents' home we got, by luck, apartments just as close. We also share a lot of our best friends, and are sure that we will spend our future together as well… both as best friends and as business partners.

We have been working for other artists before our break, such as the 'Swedish Danceprincess' September. Also the Eurovision winner Charlotte Nilsson Perrelli and Swedish Melodifestivalen winner Pernilla Wahlgren.

Trival facts about Carin: she loves to jump on the trampoline and competing in horse back riding. Emma's hidden talents are eating a lot of food and then burping for hours. And her favourite thing in life is driving a great car way too fast!

And now, because Wikipedia seem to like proof that something is true, like the person whose page it is writing it, what would be a good lie about Miss Match, which could masquerade itself as a truth on your page…

In the song 'Drop Dead' we wanted a real dog panting in the background so we decided to organise an open dog audition in Stockholm. It was almost as tough as the auditions for Idol, but at the end of the day we found our star - 'Fantastic Pam'. During the Melodifestivalen she also stood backstage panting live because as you probably already know - all vocals have to be totally live! We are the first artists in the contest's history who have used animals on stage!

The week of these questions being written, Robyn – a Swedish singer, looks set to be number one on the UK charts, which in itself is quite amazing. Do you ever think that Miss Match could be number one in the UK?

That would be such a dream for us, because we have always loved the UK pop-scene We hope to come over to you soon and to tour the whole country…

About three metres away from where we are at the moment is a copy of the new Harry Potter book. If you could have a magical power, what would it be and why?

Carin: I would like to have the power to make people laugh because it would make the earth a better place to live!

Emma: I would like to be able to be invincible! Then I could listen to peoples' conversations and peek in the boys changing room! (Laughs) Also it would be great when you are just about to bump in to someone you'd rather not meet…

As you are a girlband who has obviously done their research – what other girlbands do you love at the moment?

Sugababes are one of our favourite girlbands, because of their great songs and the girls' fantastic vocals. And of course Spice Girls will be forever in our minds...!

What is your view of the UK's true girlband – Girls Aloud? And what is your favourite Girls Aloud song?

Girls Aloud are not that big in Sweden unfortunately, but we hope that Swedish radio will take up more of their songs soon. They are a really great set of girls with a lot of attitude, which we love! Songs like 'The Show', and 'Life Got Cold' are really cool. And we just love their new single 'Sexy! No No No' and the cool video for it!

While writing these questions – we've just been listening to some Beyonce. She recently fell over during a concert. What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?

Emma: I forgot to spit out my chewing gum before entering the stage and I had to get rid of it before the song would start. In panic I couldn't find a good place so I had to put it in my hand, but the problem was that I had gloves on. Well, the song started and I realized that one of our first moves is to put the same hand on the mic stand. Of course it stuck and I had to move from the stand, so when I did everything came with it and crashed on the stage. When I finally stood up I had to leave a glove stuck on my mic stand for the whole show…

Carin: Once I invited our two dancers up on stage… well that's what I thought anyway, but since the audience were kind of wild the whole crowed jumped up on stage and Emma's necklace got lost in the chaos and my high heeled shoe broke!

Lastly, if you were the president of the world, imagining the position existed, what would be the first law you would make?

To make fun, not war!

BWO Reveal Tracklisting for New Album Fabricator!

Fabricator

Those Swedish wonders and newly appointed EQ Fold members, otherwise known as BWO,  have released the track-listing on their new MySpace Page for their upcoming album 'Fabricator' which drops next month on 29th September.

BWO are coining the new term "electronordica" which we think is an outstanding play on words if you ask us electroqueers and we are looking forward to having a proper swedish dance party when the album is released.  This video has already made the rounds on the other blogs, but for your EQ enjoyment, here is their latest video, 'Let It Rain'.  However we quite like and prefer 'Rhythm Drives Me Crazy'.

Too Damn Precious...

The sound is unbelievably bad (it wasn't this bad live...someone has some dodgy audio settings on their video device...or they must have been standing next to the giant subwoofer...)  But you get the picture...just mute the YouTube and play you're cd over the audio!  LOL.  And you did buy your new 'This Delicate Thing We've Made' CD today didn't you?  Good EQs.

"Her name is Nicole!"

Nicole Scherzinger now has a video.

It is brilliant and sexy, smart and sensual, interesting and influential, bold and underlined, different and intriguing, cool and charming. It is many different things and at the end of the day, it isn't at all quixotic; it is just perfect.

The song ('Whatever You Want') has started to get a bit better too.

Something More On The Veronicas...

Vero

Vero2Over the weekend, The Veronicas' new single has popped out of no-where, and now can be found on seedier parts of the Internet. It is called 'Hook Me Up', and on the right you can see a very, very small picture of what it is believed the cover is going to be. That's right: two telephones with their cords 'hooked up'. Oooh...

Now that 'the news' is out of the way, what do we think of the song? Well, it isn't that bad. It is much more 'electro meets pop in a dark alley' than their last album, 'The Secret Life Of', which was pop to the extreme. In some ways, this song then probably represents a change in their sound from the pop-rock chic girls that they were, to the more experimental second album sound that they can now afford to have fun with.

This though doesn't mean that you will love it. After listening to it fifteen times now, personally, I'm not too sure about it. Maybe it is one of those songs that takes an age to get into? Maybe? And maybe once you get into it, you will lose that voice that keeps shouting 'The Sugababes could have done this so much better if they had been given a chance'.

However, while that is all that is going to be said about the actual song, it does seem right to quote - in part - this message from The Veronicas' forums, by Lisa, one of the two that make up the duo that is The Veronicas.

"GUYS! I have no idea about why the song is already on i-tunes (we are currently contacting WB etc to find out).. but very much appreciate the fact that you guys are so excited!!! I hope you all love the track- and the new sound  xoxo"

Just reading it should, hopefully brighten up your life - and show that shit happens to popstars too. (Along with them being gifted with bad grammar and punctuation skills).

In their case, a single was put on to iTunes early; in your case you might of been hit by a bus and placed in hospital for sixteen weeks on a life support machine - all of which goes to show that you should be worried about big things in life, be it big corporations, or big things.

Darren Hayes Trips the Laser Fantastic at G-A-Y

P1010003_3

Darren Hayes delivered a fantastic show at 1:30am at G-A-Y in London last night for his album launch which was chuck full of lasers, lights fantastic and drunken clubbers.  It was nice to see Darren make the extra effort with the lights and lasers as usually shows at G-A-Y aren't this elaborate.  Quality production for a G-A-Y appearance if you ask us!

Setlist: 'Casey', 'Who Would Have Thought', 'Step Into The Light', 'Me Myself and I', 'Insatiable' and of course new single 'On The Verge Of Something Wonderful'.

P1010007_2

After the show, I got to catch up with Darren and crew where we had a fun chat about all things EQ like 'What will be Robyn's next single?' (Darren really loves Robyn's 'Bum Like You' and 'Robotboy'!) and the 'Brilliance of Siobhan Donaghy/our thoughts on her starring in RENT'.

Antigone looked funky dory last night too - think Lady Miss Kier in pink and pearls and Justin Shave was sporting a flawless 'Fuck Off I'm In The Band' t-shirt.  Guitarist Steve Young gives us his best rock n roll pose for the EQ camera below...

The Rumours Are True - Siobhan Donaghy Talks About 'Rent' Remixed

Rent1

So Siobhan Donaghy has confirmed that she is infact starring in the remixed version of RENT in London and had this to say on her MySpace page regarding her work commitments and why she chose to take on this project with such a sexy new cast...

Siobhan: Sorry it's been forever since I have updated my page! But I've some exciting news all though I see a few people on here already know about it, you are always ahead of the game.....where do you find these things out!??

So I'm going to be playing the character Mimi Marquez in the new updated version of Jonathan Larson's musical. William Baker is directing it who has been art directing Kylies projects for many a year. In fact, everyone behind the scenes are so wonderful and have CV's to die for. They contacted me about getting me to audition over a month ago now and I just didn't think I'd be cut out for this kind of work. It's 8 shows a week! But they are confident I can do it and I have a very experienced cast who I'll be working with who have promised to give me every trade secret to get me through!

It's a touching story about a group of impoverished friends, where some, my character included, are battling with aids, and serious drug addition. We get by because of our love for one another and just last week I flew out to New York to see the show on Broadway and totally understood why it is about to become the 2nd longest running musical over there. We need it revamped over here for a London audience and that's what we're doing. We're just about to head into rehearsal and the show opens for previews on the 2nd of October and officially on the 16th Oct @ The Duke Of York Theatre.

I have turned down many work commitments I had previously in order to do this show as I feel something very special is being created!! A tour will now be rescheduled for early 2008. In the mean-time, you can catch me performing at Manchester Pride on the 26th August @ Popstarz.

The response to the album has been fantastic, considering I tend to commit commercial suicide, all that matters is that you love the tunes. That makes me happy!

Love and kisses from your newly appointed thespian friend.

Ooo I nearly forgot, head on over to The Rent Official myspace page and befriend them. They'll keep you up to date with all the latest on the show. they also have some pics up.

Our Thoughts On 'This Delicate Thing We've Made' Disc One

Let me just start by saying that no review I could possibly write will do this album justice, so forgive me as I spew all these thoughts out now on disc one in one quick and easy go...as I think I'll go crazy trying to write the perfect review - it's too big of a job for me.  It's a lovable fuzzy and sometimes scary monster to get your head around.  I can't even imagine how exhausting a creative journey this was for Darren Hayes.  You can feel the blood, sweat and tears that was poured into this timeless double-album.  Darren let me just tell you that it was worth it.  You should feel exceptionally proud.

Delicate1

When my copy of 'This Delicate Thing We've Made' by Darren Hayes arrived, I knew it wasn't going to be my usual 'just pop it into the iTunes and formulate a few thoughts on it' type of review.  No.  This album was going to be something different.  Having attended almost every one of Darren's residency Club Delicacy performances over the last 4 months in London - I thought I knew what to expect when I heard the finished product.  How wrong I was to make that assumption.  For what I was about to hear was a completely different journey than anticipated.

One thing I noticed about disc one of this magnificent piece of art, is that there is the feeling of constant movement, as if you are almost on a cosmic gliding mechanism from the moment the first track 'Fear Of Falling Under' starts to unfold.  Having picked up where 'Tension and The Spark' left us, this track is a perfect opener for the journey I was about to be taken on.  It kinda feels like a dip into Darren's dreamscape - think of Madonna's unusual track 'Bedtime Story' if you will, which meshes and flows flawlessly into 'Who Would Have Thought' in which Darren somewhat angrily asks himself, 'who would have thought that love so belated could save me?'  It's not a happy finding, it's one of almost foolish and shameful discovery.  This track musically still reminds me of Depeche Mode's 'Walking In My Shoes' - one of my favourite electronic works to date.

Delicate2

'Waking The Monster' is a pleasant and unexpected electronic surprise.  I am introduced to 'The Professor' who is maniacally crafting something secret in the laboratory.  This intricate contraption he is building is going to be used in 'How To Build A Time Machine' which is a track I never really fully understood until now.  Sure, Darren describes it as a dream in which he goes back in time to correct all the wrongs he has experienced in life.  When the song is performed live you don't get the privilege of hearing it back again or pausing this fast tempo number to fully understand it.  Now that I can do this - I quickly realise how really touching and poignant this notion of forgiveness is that Darren is touching upon.  By the time the tracks slows down I am almost brought to tears, remembering and relating to my own differences with my two fathers - yes plural.  When Darren sings about telling his reflection that 'it was not his fault' I am weakened to my core.  I can't hold in the tears anymore.  This song is my new anthem.  I hope it's never released as a single - because it's too personal for me.

Not holding back, Darren hits you hard again with the beautifully orchestrated track 'Casey' (Some of the best strings I've heard on a song in a long time).  I had heard that the muse in this track is really Darren's sister, but what I quickly realise is that 'Casey' can be almost anyone you've looked up to in life.  That one person who gave you a glimpse of hope for the future - who reassured us that we were meant for something more amazing, rather than this life you were born in.  You can be anywhere, you can be anyone and you will relate to this beautiful song.  There are almost no words that can describe how perfect this song is.  Darren has aimed to create the perfect pop song and has nailed it.  He's done it.  I can't imagine anyone in this world coming up with one criticism for this song.

'Step Into The Light' is still one of my favourite songs of this year.  Hearing it perfectly nestled on disc one couldn't please me any more.  If you haven't listened to this track on full blast on your computer system you are missing out on an experience - it's a piece of music that is flawlessly constructed and meshes well with Darren's haunting and melodic voice over a cushy bed of electronica.  This section of disc one is amazing.  I dry my tears.

Delicate3

There are a few Savage Garden-esqe moments on this album and I don't have much to say about 'Sing To Me' other than it feels like it could have been any Savage Garden song from yesteryear.  However, 'Conversation With God' is a very curious track to me.  Darren paints the picture of himself and God on a pensive and sonic road trip through life.  Darren talking to God and God screaming a few unpleasant observations back at him.  It's a slightly eerie track, although not musically, but in it's spiritual sentiment.

'The Sun Is Always Blinding Me' gives me that Savage Garden feeling again (take what you will of that observation - good or bad, but it's just my observation).  A lovely track, like one of those 'stop and smell the roses' and 'see the beauty in all small things' kind of track.  'Listen All You People' feels like 'Affirmation' re-written for today.  I think Darren might cringe if he reads this, but don't let this description sway you're judgment of this song.  It's a positive, upbeat song and we are starting to notice that the darkness that Darren Hayes was in engulfed in on the last album is slowly lifting away in a soft gentle breeze of musical whimsy.

'The Only One' is a delicate track.  Simple in it's sound, but intricate in it's construction.  A love song.  A poem perhaps.  If I were Darren's partner, I would feel very proud to have this song written about me.  'Bombs Up In My Face' is one of those songs that I love more and more with every play.  I'm not a political person by any stretch of the imagination.  But you can't escape the current political climate no matter how hard you try to cover up your eyes and/or your mouth.  It's great to know that Darren doesn't fear making his strong feelings regarding gay marriage, George Bush, homelessness, false idols and terrorism public knowledge.  Some people find this track completely left-field and awkward, but it's one of the strongest tracks on the album if you ask me.  The current world is making me a more paranoid person and 'its time we started to give a fuck' is the message that I take away from hearing this song.

Delicate4

'The Great Big Disconnect' is the closing track on disc one.  Continuing on the political climate and false idols theme in a more classic singer/songwriter format, this seems like a natural pause for the album.  This song should have been Madonna's 'Hey You' if you ask me - it works a lot better than Lady M's attempt to spread a John Lennon message to the masses.

Wow.  That was a lot to digest and it's only disc one.  Stay tuned for my thoughts on disc two coming up shortly (I do have some critisisms as well) when I have calmed down enough from my fit of 'blubbering sensitivity' after hearing Time Machine/Casey played back-to-back.  Damn you Darren, you made this big girl cry...

A Belated Postcard From Italy

Sicily_postcard

Hello EQs - it's Raj here and I am back from my little holiday in Sicily.  I had a wonderful time with Geri learning all about his life before he moved to London.  While in Sicily, I also had a few musical realisations...

  • The music of Nelson Clemente and Antigone sound REALLY good on long drives in the countryside.
  • Techno music sounds so out-of-date now.  Why do they still play it in dodgy bars?
  • Electronic music still takes awhile for non-music types to get used to.  Sooner a later, they succumb to it's brilliance and fall under it's trance.
  • Don't ever go on holiday a week before Darren Hayes releases a record.
  • Madonna can put any argument at ease.  Argument ensues, turn on Madonna.

So I am really looking forward to getting back to blogging regularly on EQ.  Tomorrow I will be writing up my review on the first half of Darren's new record as well as going on down to G-A-Y to check out the album launch.  You'll probably start to think EQ will be turning into a Darren Hayes fansite over the next week or so, but honestly, we can't do much about that ;)  'This Delicate Thing We've Made' is a phenomenal piece of work and you will get so sick of hearing about it on here that you will have no choice but to go out and buy the record next week.

And a little side note - Geri proposed to me yesterday in Sicily and I said 'yes'.

Guest Blogging By Mr. Simon Curtis

You may have seen this review already, but as Electroqueer has become THE PLACE to hear about (as Raj might call him) THE GENIUS that is Darren Hayes, it seems completely right to post this great review of his up-and-coming album, 'This Delicate Thing We've Made'. A review tapped out by the genius that is Simon Curtis, who very kindly sent this to me.

So, take it away Simon...

The night of June 22nd was a very special one for me.  This, my dears, was my first time to ever see Darren Hayes in concert.  From the get-go, I took the entire experience in with reserved awe; in such an intimate setting as the Roxy in Los Angeles, it was almost a goal of mine to ensure this concert remained exactly that, an experience.  Typically, I am the insufferable twat bounding endlessly like a kangaroo on crack who is hell-bent on ensuring that the artist notices, consequently making the concert his own personal show of sorts.  I didn’t want that this night for some reason.  I wanted to remain a face in the crowd, and absorb the music as it should be absorbed.  Needless to say, Mr. Hayes did not disappoint, far from it in fact (and I still managed to dance like a much sweatier version of said kangaroo).

It is not very often that an artist who’s career has been such a mainstay of radio, one seemingly omnipresent throughout one’s life, begins to make the climb to the top of one’s list of favorite artists and musical influences well past their pop-radio prime.  Mostly, they tend to be there from the beginning, instantly taking hold of your fan-ship, as it were.  But after the night of June 22nd, 2007, Darren Hayes had completed the slow trek he’d embarked on 10 years prior, beginning with Savage Garden, and claimed a perch at the peak of my musical idols.

This experience, his experience, was undoubtedly the single-most impactful musical experience of my life so far.  This was also the first time I was able to experience what was in store on his new double-disc opus, “This Delicate Thing We’ve Made.”  Now that I have been living with this record for several days, letting it marinate, as it were, the dust has begun to settle, and I feel that now I can finally make a worthy assessment of how this particular experience settles with me.

Before we begin, let it be known just how much Mr. Hayes has to live up to in my eyes in following up what is truly one of my favorite albums of all time, “The Tension and The Spark.”  The words “a lot,” don’t really begin to do it justice.  With that said, it can be safely assumed that my expectations for this record were, suffice it to say, through the roof.  Now that it has indeed “settled” with me, I find myself both over and under-whelmed all at the same time.

Sonically, Darren has never been more on point.  If a love note were ever written to express how masterful pop-production and sound engineering could indeed sound, this record would be it.  With Robert Conley at the helm of “Spark” and now Justin Shave taking the reigns on this beautiful beast, it seems the formerly Savage singer has quite a knack for finding veritable virtuosos in the production realm.  His musical partners clearly not only share his vision, but also hone and magnify those visions, adding much to the exposition of Darren’s conveyance of thought.  The production on this record is more integral to this conveyance than ever, what with recurring themes of quantum physics, science, and, ironically enough, engineering, and is utterly astounding to say the least.  The album’s opener, “Fear of Falling Under” is a sheer sonic masterpiece; not so much a stand alone song as a fully developed intro, “Fear’s” connective blend into “Who Would Have Thought?” is the first of many powerful, chill-inducing moments waiting to be found within the album’s 25 tracks…

25 tracks…
Twenty five whole songs…
Twenty five…
Ten plus ten,
Plus five again…

I think I may be the first Darren acolyte to say that this was just too many for this record.

Now before you throw your hands up in arms and crucify me on the spot oh ye less-than-forgiving readers, please understand how badly I wanted this to work, how much I wanted this to be the sprawling opus it almost is.  With “The Tension and The Spark” we the fans were treated to a glimpse into a truly brilliant recording artist’s, not to mention songwriter’s, mind at the time.  What we found was a haunted expanse of pain yet un-dealt with, thoughtful contemplations regarding the human experience, and witty musings on the world around him.  That album’s single disc was just enough to express what was being expressed concisely, enough to let Darren’s penchant for recurring themes, and sometimes phrases (“eyes connecting” and the lack thereof, etc) resound, but not grow redundant.  Here, on “This Delicate Thing We’ve Made” we find so many recurring themes and phrases, so many times, that it does become redundant.  Thoughts and phrases fully, and beautifully, expounded upon during “How to Build a Time Machine” are found several more times throughout the record, so many relationships and connections are said to be “amazing,” we hear about “this town” so very many times over the course of the record that one can almost predict when the lyric is about to bubble up again by the time you reach the album’s end.  In 15 songs, this is reiteration, a mere recurring theme.  In 25 songs, however, it does unfortunately become redundant.

With so many songs, Darren also has too much room to meander.  A record that decidedly concerns revelation (revelation of the past, revelation of love, etc) strays too much on songs like "Bombs Up In My Face" and "The Great Disconnect."  Despite the former being really sonically innovative and entertaining, its political messages seem to come out of nowhere and the latter is so blandly un-Darren it is almost cringe-worthy.  Such Bono-esque, "heal the world" tripe is not what I think any Darren fan waits years to hear when he releases much anticipated new material.  In an album of storytelling from a typically introverted storyteller, the odd commentary resonate as exactly that, odd.  A shorter tracklist would definitely provide some necessary hedging here and there.

Another flaw seemingly magnified by the record’s length is the occasional unpalatable lyric.  To be frank, some are too far-reaching, seemingly haphazard for the sake of being haphazard and at times self-indulgent.  Darren ironically describes what the album almost becomes when he says he’s “searching for pieces, pieces left behind, discarded moments in the junkyard of my mind.”  The last album was an invitation to a devilishly dark, deep, underground museum within Darren’s heart and mind, complete with tour-guide and all, whereas this one seems to be a couple hours spent in the sun-dappled attic of Darren’s mind while his heart has tea downstairs, pre-occupied with his new love; yes one finds many, many treasures during the stay, but must sift through quite a dusty bit to find it, without a guide at that.

Do not let these past few paragraphs fool you into thinking that I am by any means disappointed by this record, for that is truly not the case.  I, for one, am loving every moment I spend in this attic of priceless antiques, pictures of the past, gilded time machines, and hidden treasures.

My favorite find so far has to be “Walk Away,” a magnificent, sprawling, acapella ode to a lover unscathed by the pain of a heartbreak that nearly cripples the other.  This song is a masterpiece, and by the time the percussion comes in toward the end, the hardest of un-phased listeners will surely be moved, if not reduced to tears.  This song is epic.  Speaking of tears, “I Just Want You to Love Me” is bar-none the best love song Mr. Hayes has ever put his voice to, and will surely draw a few from the more sensitive listener.  “Lucky Town” could have easily been crafted by the late Swede-pop luminary Denniz Pop (early Backstreet Boys, Five) or early, Robyn-era Max Martin, and “Sing to Me” could quite possibly be the best long-lost Savage Garden ballad never heard.  The intriguing little music-box that is “Neverland” stands out as it is truly the only electronic pop song I’ve ever heard recorded in 3/3 time; a waltz that is not only about a boy plotting the murder of his abusive father, but a waltz that is, well, a waltz!  With pop production and such!  Really quite genius.

Speaking of genius, I might be reading a bit too much into it, but am I the only one who is drawing a correlation between “I Like The Way’s” pulsing reiteration of “there’s just one thing missing, one thing missing here is…love” with the swirling revelation of “Step Into The Light’s” “it feels like, it feels like, it feels like, I’ve never been in love before, it feels like I’ve never been in love before, it feels like…love?”  I think I am onto something here, because both of the phrases in those songs are similar, except while the first one is about cheap, callous, love-free sex, and the kind of shallow doom it sentences one’s heart to, the other is truly a revelation that changes from “you know, I’ve never been in love before” to “it feels like I’ve never been in love before” and changes the entire context of the song’s title, “Step Into The Light,” making it so wonderfully smart on so many levels.  It’s not about coaxing someone into the light, as the song would initially have you believe, it’s about Darren stepping out of the “Darkness” he found himself surrounded by on the last record.  Simply genius, Darren.

In the realm of musical experiences, you won’t find one on par with “This Delicate Thing We’ve Made” any time soon.  Darren Hayes has grown his wings much like that little origami bird roosting all over his album artwork these days, and truly is soaring.  A bit lengthy, yes, but you’ll soon find your favorites and know which tracks to click to, know which boxes and chests to open in the attic, if you will.  So take your own step into the light, buy this record immediately, and indulge in everything pop music can aspire to be.  Club Delicacy is right.  These delicacies are worth the indulgence.
